I might be biting off more than I can chew, but I’m going to try to do all three of these ‘every day’ challenges (Listen, Read, and Speak/Write), at least to start the year. I set myself a reading goal last year…and objectively, I failed miserably (Goal: Read 1 volume of 名探偵コナン a week → Results: 16 / 52 volumes read, along with 13 volumes of Major, Major 2nd, and Card Captor Sakura). On the other hand, I really hadn’t done any reading before last year, and I might have completed that goal had I had a bit more day-to-day consistency, so overall I was still happy with how my reading went last year.
New goals for this year:
Read something every day.
Try reading a light novel at some point, rather than only manga.
Day 1 - Read the first chapter of 名探偵コナン Volume 17
First day and starting off with my NativShark book club book: 青春ブタ野郎はバニーガール先輩の夢を見ない (L29)
So far this doesn’t really seem like my type of book, but I’m flexible. It is interesting that it has a lot of furigana, but it’s not full furigana. There are things in there that have it that I wouldn’t expect it because it’s Joyo, makes me wonder what the cutoff was for what they choose not to include.
But overall so far it’s not too hard! I even saw some vocab I was just reviewing on WaniKani like 最終 and 曲線 (which funnily enough when I learned this, I was thinking “I doubt I’ll ever see that”. Proved me wrong quickly as I unlocked this on December 30th !!)
There’s no shame in not completing the challenges or alternating the challenge to fit your schedule. For example, you can try completing one challenge a day, or if you know you only have time to sit down and watch anime on the weekend, you can set the listening challenge to the weekend only.
If you have your own log, you can keep track of it there more easily and post your major updates on the respective challenge thread which gets more traffic so you can get some s to motivate you.
This isn’t necessarily aimed at you but for anyone else who struggles or stresses out trying to complete the challenges. The idea is to have challenges to motivate you, but if they end up stressing you out, it defeats the whole purpose so just do what you can.

Let’s do this! Third winter reading challenge and of course another bilingual kind: Japanese and Spanish. Goal as usual is 3-4 times a week per language.
Happy to be reading alongside people again. Hopefully will motivate me more!
Practiced both languages today. Spanish was an article on CNN plus reading the presentation materials for my Lingoda class. Japanese was Satorireader the Jammaker episode, which I have been reading for the last 8 months or so. Gotta finish it finally.
i did not, in fact, pick a new english book yesterday but i will today! i got waylaid by sorting CDs and lost time. today i spent way too much time trying to find a shakespeare quote from psycho-pass (but i found it! …can’t wait to do it all again for the titus andronicus quotes later )
edit: went with black sun by rebecca roanhorse for my eng read cos it’s been on my tbr pile for literally years. know nothing about it, seems interesting so far
Lots of reading today! One chapter each of ひとりぼっちの○○生活 and ふらいんぐうぃっち volume 1, this week’s reading of 極寒の雪山を脱出せよ, plus a little from the VN Vampire’s Melody. I keep seeing vocab that I have just learned in the books and manga I’m reading, which is a great confidence booster!
Starting my reading off with one that wasn’t even on my list for January, but I thought it might be a good one to tackle first with as it’s quite short.
I started it on Sunday and have been reading a couple of pages a day, finally finishing chapter 1 today. For a high school romance manga, it feels a lot harder than others I’ve read of a similar genre, but it might just take a bit to get used to the writing/speech style. Quite text heavy on a lot of the pages, and 33 new words in 25 pages of text, 15 of which were on just two pages which made those tricky to get through
Today I caught up with another book club, this time the Natively Children’s Book Club, where I read chapters 4 and 5 which technically takes me to week 8 ahead of time.
January 1
I started the challenge by buying two new ebooks. One of them 日本語N1文法・読解まるごとマスター is a book to improve your reading for the JLPT N1 level it has 45 texts, which are all around the lenth of the long text, which appears on the N1 test. There are grammar explanations and english translations for all texts. I read the first text it was pretty interesting about flowers which grow around a temple in Kamakura.
Also played some Final Fantasy VII Remake and finished chapter 8.
Well, I wasn’t sure if I was going to participate or not, but then I saw everyone posting in here and wanted to post too Yesterday’s update, I’ve started reading the full furigana version of 本好き, which is also divided into shorter volumes. My foray into trying out super popular light novel series begins
I’m gonna count playing an hour of Persona 5 Royal yesterday as reading, because the tutorial text and all of the descriptions in inventory are more tiring to read than books
