Today: read about half of Chap. 46 of よつばと！ This is the “Old Enough” chapter; I am disappointed to discover that “Old Enough” has been removed from Netflix in Canada, because now I want to go back and watch some more of it.

July 17Sorry for somehow missing this. I’m enjoying it a lot. Probably one of my favorite comedies I’ve gotten into this year. It’s incredibly wild where the manga is currently at versus where it was at the start. I can’t think of many other protagonists that start off super scummy and vile that end up becoming incredibly badass BECAUSE of their scummy traits while still acknowledging those traits are scummy. It’s not like she changed into a completely different character either. She’s still an egotistical attention seeker that wants to be loved and praised by all, but she’s figured out that not manipulating people, actually caring about them, rooting for them, fighting alongside them, and becoming true friends is a far better way to be loved and praised by all than being a selfish snake. The best part is that she does recognize her being nice to everyone is both because she’s come to genuinely care about the people she’s befriend (she doesn’t even expect anything back, she does just like her friends) and because she loves it when everyone is nice to her back (not expected by always welcomed).

Several days without writing here but I kept up with reading at least one chapter a day of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. After Santa showed up there’s a chapter from Edmund where spring is starting to show to the witch’s group and she gets angry with animals and turns them to stone. Edmund and company eventually have to walk because the ground is too thawed for the sleigh to work. The three good children and the beavers make contact with Aslan, he agrees to rescue Edmund if possible, but they’re attacked while Aslan is showing Peter the thrones of cair paravell, Susan blows the horn and Peter arrives to kill the wolf captain morgrim. Aslan advises him to never forget to clean his sword. In the next chapter Edmund is with the witch but she loses patience with the whole thing and starts to try to kill him as a sacrifice, suddenly the centaur and unicorn show up and after Edmund blacks out they take him to Aslan’s camp where the kids are reunited. But the happiness is short lived as the witch arrives to claim Edmund’s life as hers by right. According to deep magic from the dawn of time, she owns the lives of traitors. Aslan has a private discussion and she backs off but Aslan’s camp also moves away from the stone table. It will be put to another use. Aslan advises Peter on battle tactics, Peter asks whether he’ll be there with them when fighting the witch. Aslan makes no promises. Late that night Lucy and Susan can’t sleep, they feel like something horrible is about to happen. They get up and look for Aslan but he’s gone. By the river he’s walking slowly. They catch up to him and Aslan says they can walk with him. But they must promise to stop when he orders them to stop. A little while later they come to a hill overlooking the stone table and Aslan has them stay there hiding. He walks alone into the army of evil gathered there. Wolves, a man with the heads of cows, demons, ifriit. It’s a little unclear in the Japanese exactly what the whole army is made of, but the witch’s allies are all gathered. Aslan makes his way up to the table and is bound and muzzled and shaved. The crowd asks if he’s just a cat and whether they should get him some milk. Mocking and taunting. The witch steps up to him and asks what he’s won. By sacrificing his life to save Edmund, he saves Edmund. But without Aslan who can stop her from killing him afterwards? Forever he has handed her Narnia. The girls look away from the moment of the killing.
What a short book with a tragic ending. I sure hope nothing wacky that parallels a particular religious figure happens to sour the witch’s victory.

Read a chapter of 恋より青く, which was surprisingly short and was over before I knew it. I had a pretty busy day filled with vet visits, cleaning, DnD, and book club prep so it was a short read unfortunately. Tomorrow I do also have a few things to do, so I’ll be trying my best to make Japanese more of a priority.

笠松紫浪 全木版画集
Read pages 11 & 12 - I completely forgot the reading for 林 today, I have no idea how, that’s like one of the first kanji I ever learnt, but I just sat looking at it like ‘how do I read this??’.
Buttt thanks to Watanabe I’ve found another artist!
Elizabeth Keith
A Scottish artist, born in 1887. She travelled to Japan, Korea and surrounding areas in the 1910s-1920s and did lots of watercolour paintings of these places. She did a little exhibit in Japan of the paintings of Korea, and because of this who would she meet other than our good friend Watanabe! He convinced her to have some woodblock prints of her works and her popularity across Asia and the rest of the world continued to grow.
Another really interesting artist! She travelled back and forth from the UK and Asia for the rest of her life doing lots of paintings. And during WWII, while keeping good relations with her Japanese friends, she heavily criticised the actions of Japan and even raised funds for Chinese women affected by Japan’s war colonisations.
I’ve tried to find an artbook but… all I can find is very rare, very expensive and in Korean 
perhaps… if I were to learn Korean…

You know. Because of my joke take that Loran in DQM+ just needs to isekai into DQIX in order to revocate, I do actually kind of want to make him. While you don’t keep spells you learn in other vocations (or even the same one after revocation) in this game, they do still show up on your character sheet. So in order to keep him more or less lore-accurate, I’ll need to note down which vocations are safe for him to level in, which he can transfer into in order to dump skill points, and which he can’t touch at all due to them starting out with spells at lv 1. Malroth drops all of the Midenhall gear, which is good, but he’s presumably one of the tougher bosses considering he has a starting 10% orb drop chance, which is less good. I was thinking I’d start him with Erdrick’s armour and have his outfit progression be backwards, but in order to get one piece, you need access to Rank-S ice grotto floors… Guess we’ll see, then. The highest- rank floor I’ve got access to in any environ (that I know of) is D. And those are both maps I gave myself from my original copy!
Anyway, it took me like another hour to get that stupid platinum cookie, but I finally did. I never want to do this quest again. After that, I ended up deleting all the unstarted maps that have a chance of having a starting rank of I or H, and of course the story quest I get right after that needs Excalipurr, and none of the ones I have left can have him as a boss, while at least a couple that I deleted might have. (He can show up in maps with 魂, 闇, 光, 魔神, 星々, 悪霊, and 神々, and I know I had at least one each of the first two.) Ay. So it’s to grinding grottoes (as opposed to grotto bosses; slight difference) now. At least I now have a higher chance of finding tantamounts.
It’s still really crude and dubious for a while though, so be aware of that because I know that’s something people do not like about this manga.
July 15
We went to the place where the corpse was found and learnt a bit about the victim. This case seems to be very long, it’s even divided into three parts. I’m still at part 2.
