Happy with my progress over the past two days, mainly focusing on the kid’s story. I think this new strategy of putting new words into a spreadsheet for later review/decide whether to Anki or not is working for me. I feel less pressure, it’ll reduce daily Anki time, and I can push forward faster knowing I’m not “ignoring” unknown words.

Picking up lots of onomatopia words from this story

ぐるぐる round and round in circles
モコモコ fluffy/lumpy
ふうふう blowing on, huffing and puffing
バレバレ to be an obvious lie
じりじり slowly, bit by bit

The “Absolute Beginner” in the Absolute Beginner Book Club refers to being an absolute beginner at reading. They’re too difficult for an absolute beginner at the language in general. All the ones I’ve looked at so far have had kanji, and they all have furigana.

I do a similar thing while reading 逆転裁判 (my phone dictionary has an ‘add to list’ feature - I add every word i look up to a general list, and any word I need to look up more than once, or that I vaguely feel I recognise from elsewhere to a ‘priority’ list).

I used to add everything in everything I read to a spreadsheet and then did a frequency analysis on it to determine what I should add, but I’ve found the less barriers I put up the better. Now I literally just scribble the definition on the page and then I underline it if I feel I need to come back around later and add it to anki. [This actually annoys me I can’t do it for ebooks, since I can’t add notes or highlight in ttsu].

Basically after like three years I worked my way back around to what I would do in primary school learning words in a new field lol.

Yeh this is exactly the kind of thing I’m finding! I think because I was going in with the mindset of, “let’s add all new cards to Anki”, I was automatically bottle-necking myself because I wouldn’t want to add more than say, 10-20 a day because I then knew that reviews would likely get overwhelming, and therefore I wasn’t reading as much daily as I could have been.

I think removing that barrier, whilst also having the mental safety net of knowing I’ve noted them down somehow, will make it easier to read more with less stress, and therefore more natural SRS so that in theory I shouldn’t even need Anki to the same extent. :crossed_fingers:

本好きの下剋上 23 (40.65% → 49.21%) | 17.8k characters (102 231 / 207k char.)

Today was a better day for reading. Not half asleep. The two chapters were interesting with new characters and discoveries.

This is the second time this book I’ve seen this phrase so I’m starting to lean towards it not being a typo.

いただきとう存じます

At first I thought it was supposed to be いただこうと存じます, but I guess not. Some of the characters in this series talk weird so it’s not too surprising.

  • Back in court in 逆転裁判。Very exciting stuff. This had some testimony that forced me to learn the difference between 右 and 左 on-sight which I have to admit until now I have just been kind of deducing from context instead of actually bothering to read lol.
  • Finished こういうのがいい1 and really enjoyed it even if the female lead is one of the slangiest characters I’ve read for some time.

I’ve been thinking of going back to Frieren for a bit, think it’s about time I dip back in. And of course I need to get around to starting up the ダン飯1 vocab sheet…

Figuring out slang that isn’t even slang but is just some character’s speech quirk is always a bit annoying lol. At least if they repeat it a lot you can sort of get used to it…

All I read is VNs these days… Not that I’m complaining! I’m having so much fun with it. I can’t concentrate on just one VN though, so I read a little here and a little there.

Today I read 5000 characters from Island :desert_island: :snowflake:, finished Chapter 8 of Loopers, and kept reading Everlasting Flowers :white_flower:

Are they all too difficult for me? Yes! Do I care? No! And with the help of Textractor (for Island) and access to instant translation to English (Loopers and Everlasting Flowers) it really doesn’t matter. I do see that I can read more without help now than in the beginning though. It’s getting easier! Still not easy, not by far, but easier than when I started at level 5!

:ring: 葬送のフリーレン 4 manga 27 :arrow_forward: 0% → 31%
  • Trial continues in 逆転. I think I’ll be done with this case in another session or two - the witness broke pretty easily, but it is only the second case. Then will probably take a break to read a book for a bit and let the lawyer vocab settle. (Thank god these games are popular enough that people leave transcripts in Japanese and in English online, because there’s no bloody autolog function).
  • Read three chapters of 葬送のフリーレン4. I’ve been thinking this for a while, but I actually find Frieren a bit more of a difficult read than say FMA or Dungeon Meshi (even having watched the anime), partially because I think the manga panelling just sort of… isn’t as good? Arakawa in particular is really good at making it very obvious what is going on, but Frieren by comparison can feel a bit more ambiguous.

31st august i know it’s september now

very late to a round up post but i really fell off the end of the challenge. life got in the way plus some other stuff but i think i’m getting back into the swing of things now!

i managed to keep up with nhk articles and dictionary entries, but didn’t read as much as i maybe would’ve liked of either. i did manage to read four english books, which was two more than my goal! …but i’ve once again stopped partway through a book :frowning: takes time to build a new habit, i suppose

i think of the things i read, parasyte was my favourite!

bravely default has turned out to not be quite as taxing as i was expecting when i first started it, so i’ll probably be chipping away at that for a good while in between challenges (until i inevitably give up when i have to face the grind again asdfghjkl)

congrats to everyone who completed the challenge and i’ll (probably… :crossed_fingers: ) see you in the next one!

Didn’t read any yesterday because I was hella tired and angry, so not at all in the mood for reading. Today I’m much less tired, so today was better.

Things are getting real exciting in Honzuki right now :eyes: Spoiler!: Sudden blunt proposal?! And there’s going to be a battle/match to settle who’s gonna marry who. I’d love to read more, but I have early errand tomorrow :smiling_face_with_tear:

Yeah, I don’t know why the 1-2-3 collection doesn’t have them other than maybe development timing. Actually 1-2-3 collection did come out before GAA1+2 i think…? Who knows
