I met up with an old coworker for coffee/lunch, so I didn’t start doing any reading till this evening, but I have begun!
I know that よつばと！ gets a fair number of recommendations for beginners, but I did not anticipate how funny I would find it. Maybe the fact that I teach kids is part of it but I’m just so entertained, I have been laughing out loud at some parts.
I also read a couple of NHK Easy articles, faster than I would have predicted which was a nice surprise.
And I finally installed Yomitan, which wasn’t super necessary for NHK Easy, but felt like another little comittment to reading more in Japanese. You don’t install a quick and easy way to do look ups unless you’re anticipating needing it after all.

April Summary
April was crazy productive for me. This is at least partially thanks to this challenge which took me from reading maybe twice a week to reading 2 hours a day on a good day! I ended up reading books and manga for 38h 25m, and visual novels for 56h 40m. This is all the time I spent studying Japanese in April:
I quite literally improved in leaps and bounds. This was especially noticable while reading Harry Potter. When I started the first book last year it took me ages to get through a page, and I wanted to look up every single word I didn’t know, even though I read through each chapter in English first. After spending so much more time reading, and especially reading visual novels, it has become much more comfortable for me to skip over details I might not 100% understand as long as I get what’s happening overall.
I’ve also noticed that I’ve become much faster while reading the texts in The Great Japanese 小中級. In January it took me 10-15 minutes per text. Now I’m down to 6-9 minutes.
Reading more, understanding more and enjoying more Japanese has given me a lot of motivation for my studies. In April I studied 615 new words and 61 new Kanji in Anki.
May Summary
After the absolute success that was April, May turned out to be a huge letdown. Keeping motivation high for a 30-day challenge is definitely possible! After that I just… didn’t feel like doing it anymore. I think next season I’ll only do the first month and try to work more with my own natural rhythm.

1st april
day one here we go! my table keeps getting bigger and bigger, idk how this keeps happening 
well, it is meant to be a challenge!
current main read is マスカレード・ホテル by higashino keigo, which will probably take the better part of the challenge to get through. i’m aiming for a chapter a (week)day though some of them look a bit lengthy, looking at the book club’s stats… i’ve moved on to 龍が如く８ (aka infinite wealth and the last one i own 
aside from kurohyou 1 and 2 but nvm those) which i won’t get to go on today but i will tomorrow so in the table it goes! currently towards the start of chapter 4.
other stuff, i’m giving the syosetsu version of the isekai manga i read at the end of the last challenge a go, it’s 382 chapters long, has a bunch of words i don’t know/see often, and i’m only on chapter 3. …could be here a while. didn’t get to manga read today. my eng read is a reread in prep to read the sequel.

Excited to get started! I’m kind of reading on and off throughout most days, making it hard to grab an endpoint and say the amount I read in a day, so I’ll just post whenever I feel like saying stuff about what I’m reading.
Today is probably gonna be mostly Frogman
I picked this up completely on a whim because, well, look at it. That said, so far it’s been way darker than expected and also way more difficult in its language. I can understand it, I’m just moving slowly and looking up a lot of words cause it’s unexpectedly fancy about its vocab. Right now there’s been a lot of music terminology; my actual music knowledge is pretty poor so I’m over here learning the Japanese for stuff like “pentatonic scale” going “yep, that is a term I’ve seen in English!” I’m about 1/3 through, have already been reading a while at a snail’s pace but I’m hoping to focus more on this soon.
I’ve been reading a physical novel before bed, and right now it’s this! Murder time, in my reading materials. Pretty slow going because I read for short times and there are more lookups needed than I’d like for slow manual ones, but it is what it is. I’m quite interested in the setup so far, anticipating when the meat of it starts. Only about 50 pages in.
Sometime today I’ll play some Xenoblade Chronicles which is some reading, but half listening… it kinda counts for this, but ehh.
I’ve got more I’m in the midst of with clubs, and I’ll be starting some visual novels through this challenge, but I’ll talk about that when the time comes.

For my first day I just read the easy version if the クリスマス キャロル in Japanese from 多読 ブックス which has been staring at me for over a year now.
Even though it wasn’t difficult at all (afterall I already know the story), I do feel accomplished finally finishing it. Now only two more of those to go!
Also it’s pretty intimidating starting a real book again, so this was a good way to get into reading again for sure. Looking forward to tomorrow

Almost done with Zero Escape! I’m following the Visual Novel Book Club who read it in 2023. This is my first visual novel and I’m very much not a gamer, so it’s really helped me to have a sort of guide to follow

Today’s reading was a half chapter from 銀の匙 for the IMC book club and a little Honzuki. They are both harder than what I’m used to, but it feels good to challenge myself!

First day of the spring challenge! Just a tiny read. Did a ton of listening instead, ehehe. Maybe because I’ve lost interest in this book. Currently 2.5/5 stars. Still, I’ll do my best to finish the book within the week is over.
