Still April 1st over here, and just finished my first read!
I only did half a satori article, and it was rough diving back into it, but a lot of fun too. It’s slowly coming back to me.

Right now I’m reading 風立ちぬ (currently 70% through) and my current volume of Slam Dunk! I’ll update when I finish books :))
I love Medalist!! I agree though, it’s a little bit harder for me than other manga. Sometimes the longer chapters also makes it a little more difficult. It shouldn’t, I often don’t read by chapter anyway, but for some reason it makes a difference to me haha

・56 pages of さいとう市立さいとう高校野球部 おれが先輩? finishing ch 6 and starting ch 7, and leaving off on pg 300
I’ve been reading さい高野球部 in fits and spurts on break at work since it’s on the easier side, although I’d actually wanted to finish it at home last month—but, between rereading よつばと! since I got vol 16 and falling headfirst into writing NWN2: Mysteries of Westgate fic, that clearly didn’t happen. Hopefully tomorrow, though; I’ve only got 26 pages left. I still have absolutely no idea what novel I’m gonna read next, though. And I have over 100 in my 積読 pile…
Oh, but Yuusaku actually used the 渾名こと本名 construction correctly in ch 7! Four times! Normally he gets them mixed up and then corrects himself, but I’m not sure how much is bc he struggles to remember how it’s formulated and how much is bc he thinks of their nickname as their real name lmao (With Rin-chan especially, I wouldn’t be surprised if the latter is part of it. He thinks it feels weird whenever anyone calls him Suzuki-sensei and it actually often takes him a mo to remember who that is, bc Rin-chan is just Rin-chan.)
Oh my god. Ichirou called Yuusaku へたれ in a gentle tone “like calling the name of one’s girlfriend.”
…I only just realized today that Asano-sensei switched from 科白 in earlier volumes to 台詞… I don’t even know if it was in the previous volume or this one.
some vocab of note
海鼠 (ナマコ) [n.] Sea slugs being sea cows actually kinda makes sense (and it’s cute), but the sea rat is… the sea cucumber. Okay.
有史以来 (ゆうしいらい) [n., adv.] since the dawn of history
・アホか、おまえは有史以来のアホだぞ。
転嫁 (てんか) [n., する v. (他)] shifting (blame, responsibility, etc.); passing the buck
・その責任を何気に長瀞に転嫁しようとしている。
伏字 (ふせじ) [n.] symbol used in place of a censored word
long 例文 bc it’s funny
「それと『
︎:black_circle:︎:black_circle:︎:black_circle:︎は:black_circle:︎:black_circle:︎:black_circle:︎のくせに、急に:black_circle:︎:black_circle:︎:black_circle:︎:black_circle:︎:black_circle:︎:black_circle:︎性質なもんで、強気のリードの方が本来の力を発揮できる。
(Because they’ve known each other so long they’re practically psychic when it comes to each other lmao)

Day one:
Read the following NHK article on the Myanmar earthquake. Reading today definitely revealed my need to study grammar. I could make out some of what was being said but feel as if I missed details because of my current deficiency in grammar. I’m sure this will get better through more practice—something I feel motivated to do thanks to this thread!

Re-reading ドラゴンボール, hard copy, 10 pages. The first pass was all guess work, with no crutches besides the pictures. Those are so good that I still could enjoy the story even if I understood less than half of the text.
Today I took the opposite approach: pass each dialog through the translate app to get the rough meaning and then try to parse each sentence. There’s not enough kanji for me to be able to read properly, but each time I recognize vocabulary from the kana, I feel like I’ve won the lottery
. Parsing the dialog with the camera is a bit hit or miss, it seems it gets confused by the furigana?! Still it helped a lot. The whole exercise took a good hour.
Read episode 12 of 恋人 on Satori: what a breeze compared to the manga. Word of the day: 叫び出す to let out a cry

So I’ll make a post celebrating the beginning of this challenge,
I don’t think I will keep posting updates daily but I will try to update once in a while on my progress. I will update the checklist however.
Best of luck to everyone <3

Although I already started コーヒーが冷めないうちに prior to the start of the reading challenge, since this one is my intensive reading book, I reread from the beginning today (with the help of the growing vocab list I made a start on last time).
I read a bit further than before and noticed the first instance of correctly guessing a word from context (壁)which was a fun little win amongst the otherwise very slow progress with many a dictionary look up!
Edit: Read some more よつばと!

Read just some pages this morning that were surprisingly difficult. Whenever the text switches from being dialogue focused to describing the milieu there are a lot more formal or literary forms that I’ve never come across before.
Will read further in the evening too.

Decent chunk of novels. 六人の噓つきな大学生 is slow. Approachable, but dense. It reminds me of reading ノルウェイの森, just with more vocab lookups.
I spent a few hours trying to get ひぐらし set up with texthookers and a whole load of other fancy stuff I didn’t know existed until like 2 weeks ago. I think it’s working. Most of the playing today was either spent fixing stuff or just getting the feel for it. My anki setup currently is tailored towards easily putting in words from physical novels I’m reading, though, so if I’m going to start doing VN reading and yomichan’ing, I’ll need to match up both systems. I don’t like messing around optimising Anki too much, though, and I have a huge backlog from my break anyway, so that’s another day’s problem. For now, just reading and enjoying.

2nd april
today’s chapter of masquerade hotel was much shorter than yesterday’s but it was slow going. brain wasn’t with it. i did get to my manga tho! it’s about a guy who’s just got out of prison and wants to apprentice under a prominent rakugo performer because he was so moved by a performance he did. it’s hard, and not just cos of all the rakugo stuff, but i’m enjoying it a lot more than i thought i would!
today’s nhk article was this one (crime, i wanted a short one).

I’m going to try really hard to keep up with the challenge this time, even if it’s just a little bit each day.
Both yesterday and today I read one article from NHK News Web Easy.

Today I read a few pages of 世界から猫が消えたなら and must admit it’s harder than I remembered it (started it last challenge and had a bit of a long paiuse now). I still kinda like the story though and the random thoughts of the protagonist.
