6000 characters from Island today, and another bad ending. Really curious to see where this will all end!

Yesterday I worked a 12h shift and didn’t update here, but I finished Chapter 7 of また、同じ夢を見ていた. Today was not a good reading day either, I was distracted by other tasks.

I feel like I read more than I skimmed the rest of Honzuki 16. My goodness, did I get impatient at the end with the last short story. Anyway! Tomorrow is finally time for Honzuki 17, from now I can count pages and lookups
For the occasion, I switched over from yomichan to yomitan to get the AnkiConnect function to work. While reading on PC, I plan on adding all lookups as a way to count them, while on phone there’s a history list in my dictionary, so now I won’t have to depend on my phone dictionary anymore as the sole way of counting lookups.
Pure guesstimate: I think it’s going to take me at least 4 days to complete the book and I’ll be pleasantly surprised if it takes me less than that.
任務完了! vocabulary learnt over the course of the challenge
Managed to read an episode of “The Jam Maker” for 60 out of 61 days (I was out hiking with friends and then enjoying a floating sauna with same friends on the day I missed - did WK but forgot about the reading challenge)
Thanks everyone and @DIO-Berry in particular. Got me finally using my Satori Reader subscription every day - initially, when I first got my subscription, I got bogged down in its SRS which was just too much SRS together with WK for me so I stopped using it. This reading challenge liberated me from that self-imposed prison & I’m real enjoying SR now.
Will continue to read an episode of a SR story through June. Anyone got any recommendations?

With CCS 1 finished, I decided to start a new manga, with the first volume of Railgun. It’s definitely the hardest manga I’ve tried yet. The scans bookwalker have are poor, but the biggest problem is how much of the vocab so far is taking some English fantasy term like pyrokineticist, rendering that in katakana for the reading, and then picking some arbitrary kanji to go with it.
The past anime discussions also told me that pervy-Kuroko was an anime invention. The manga so far indicates otherwise
Overall, I’ll probably finish out this volume but may give it a break before going onto volume 2. Also since the challenge is wrapping up. I think in June my focus is going to be on volume 2 of the bookwalker junior novel, and 13 sentinels. Like the listening thread, I might drop to weekly updates here for the challenge bonus time, since I expect “Another 30 minutes of 13 sentinels” might get boring as an update after a while

- Half a ダン飯 chapter, will try and finish this one today. It feels longer than usual, probably because the first half was a narrated story so had a few more terms I didn’t recognise at first blush. Second half is more cooking so hopefully will be easy enough to read while I’m on shift.
- If I have time will try and read a bit more 四つ子.

Last day of the month, and I managed to read every day for 2 months. Some days just a little, some days more, but I read every day. I never would have done so without this challenge! Now I just have to keep going…
Today’s reading so far was 3000 characters from Island I may read more later today, but I wanted to post now just to be sure that I didn’t forget!
31st may
finished the 解説 (which, uh, wasn’t great) of ガリレオ and i finished the whole book! wasn’t expecting to finish two whole books this challenge so i’m pretty happy with how this all turned out! as with any short story collection there were highs and lows, high points for me were cases 1, 2 and 4 (ish, was a bit soap opera-y), with 3 and 5 being a bit mid. would definitely read more of this series and more by the author! wonder what the more long-form stuff is like
also read the yuri comic jintor posted the other day (cute!) and a separate, also cute yuri comic here.
today’s nhk article was this one (nandenan article), plus the entries on あくまでも and あながち~ない in aDoAJG
words that stood out
正統 - orthodox, legitimate, traditional
興味津々 - very interesting, having a keen interest in
Happy final hours of the main challenge! Please feel free to continue through June! I’ll set up the summer challenge in about 2 weeks
May 31st!
Chapter 9 of 老女的少女ひなたちゃん today, finishing off Volume 1.
I’ve enjoyed reading this, but I don’t think I’m going to join the offshoot club if there is one because I’m starting a new job on Monday so I don’t want to overstretch myself with clubs right now. I’m adding it to my list of things to return to later when I have some free time though.
End of Challenge Summary: 100%
Books Completed
- Shadows House - Volume 16
- The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy At All - Volume 1-2
- When Will Ayumu Make His Move? - Volume 1
- Teasing Master Takagi-san - Volume 17
- Witch Hat Atelier - Volume 1
- Granny Girl Hinata-chan - Volume 1
I can’t believe how fast this year is speeding past!
Thats 17 volumes so far this year, which I’m pretty pleased with. Though I expect my pace will slow a little now, since for me, the end of this challenge also marks another ending.
After quitting my terribly stressful job at the end of last year I decided to give myself 6 months to rest and recover before starting a new job, but then I got offered a really great opportunity, so I’m starting in my new position on Monday, a month earlier than originally planned. I’m equal parts excited and anxious, so please wish me luck!
I’ll still be hanging around for the bonus month of the challenge during June - though I may be posting a little less than usual.
As always big thanks to @DIO-Berry for organizing the thread, and to everyone else who is reading, posting, cheerleading, and making recommendations. These threads are my favourite little corner of the internet - thanks for making it so cosy.

Though with both novels it should be less than 1% for them both due to title pages and stuff. I also read 9 free Tadoku books.
I am quite happy with having finished 14 books and with the progress I’ve made on those I haven’t yet finished.
I will not be continuing the challenge into June. Mostly because I need to focus on listening a bit more, but I’m also not going to stop reading. And I’d like to join the summer challenge.

A small anecdote that shows one of the benefits of reading a Visual Novel.
Today one character said 彼はXの僕だ (X is a female character from the VN, her name is not important for the anecdote). Without the voice acting, I would have probably read 僕 as ぼく, but they said it しもべ. Didn’t know that word (servant), it was quite down on my list of suggestions from Yomichan so not sure that I would have guessed it without hearing it even from the context, so yay for voice acting!
It seems I forgot posting in this thread I only missed reading one day this year. I was pretty busy with a lot of things and I am also studying for the JLPT N1 but I am not sure if I will ever pass it.
My backlog is getting smaller and smaller by the day I probably should buy some books soon. Lol I totally forgot the Higurashi visual novel club on natively I didn’t even start reading yet.

Final day of the Spring 2024 Challenge! Thank you @DIO-Berry for running the thread, and to everyone who participated. I would never have read this much if it weren’t for this challenge. I will continue posting into June, but for those who will take next month off, see you in the Summer 2024 Challenge!

It’s the end of May already?! The spring reading challenges have so far been my favorite both this year and last, I think the emergence of the sun from behind wintry clouds is really the most powerful motivator to reach my goals. I wish I’d had the time to work even harder on my reading habit this month, but between April and May I think I’m happy with my results.

Saturday, June 1st: So I’m continuing through June having finished the official challenge period and have started on a new SR story: Kiki-mimi Radio (harder version).
2024-06-01T01:44:00Z
Today is the last day of the official reading challenge. I’ve read every day for the last two months and managed to finish 2 ½ volumes of manga. So now I have a 9-month streak going. This challenge I started 私がモテないのはどう考えてもお前らが悪! and 俺物語. I’m now halfway through 私がモテないのはどう考えてもお前らが悪!2 having finished volume 1’s for the above-mentioned series. I seemed to have continued the trend of picking wordy manga to read for the challenges this year. There’s not much handwriting in what I’ve read so far, though. Which is a good thing but on the other hand, once or twice I came across a kanji with too many strokes and the digital scan couldn’t handle it when I zoomed in to try to read (recognise the shape of) it.
私がモテないのはどう考えてもお前らが悪!
I couldn’t recognise all the words but I got the gist of it. I also own this in English and have watched the anime so I’m familiar with the story. The early volumes were a bit more cringe-y than I remember it being. (Or it might just be that it’s been 10 years since I first read this manga in English and I’m now almost 2 decades older than the protagonist rather than one.)
俺物語
Just as sweet as I remember even though it has problematic romance tropes in the beginning e.g. stalking is love, sexual assault is comedic between bros etc.. Fortunately, it is addressed though not comprehensively. Well, it is only the first volume and my memory of the anime shows that it didn’t gloss over the issues that come up in a teenage romance. This is one where I’ve only watched the anime. I haven’t read any of the manga (not even fansubs) so it may be that the issues were treated differently in the anime than in the manga.
