Now that I’ve finished ちょこちゃん I can say it was decidedly meh. Not going to go out of my way to get any later volumes, but if they happen to be free and I notice them maybe.
I also attempted to read a wikipedia article, but that ended up being more an exercise in saying sounds out loud than understanding how they fit together.
Today’s reading was the first half of 放浪息子8. I watched episode 1 of the anime a while back, and if I recall correctly, this was actually where the anime started
Sun May 5: Spring ep 2 started
Mon May 6: Spring ep 2 finished
Aw you can’t just say that and not drop a title for us!
For reading habits: Right now I’m using Satori Reader on my phone because it’s easy and convenient (and probably better than scrolling social media on the phone). Also the stories have built-in vocab and grammar lookup which is super handy.
Ended up reading the rest of テレワーク on the train home in one go, which was fun, even if I only understood like 40% of it by text. Will need to go back over it carefully with lookups, but still quite happy with my understanding. A really entertaining read even if the ending had some slightly annoying drama (that ended in a good resolution, but I didn’t really like the way it started)
Started 擬似ハーレム5 as a palette cleanser, it’s really nice after this recent run of difficult reads to just poke at something that I can read almost entirely without a dictionary now and that is in really short chunks and can get through fast.
Sunday was a bad day due to bout of probable food poisoning. Still dragged myself diving which possibly wasn’t the best plan but went ok. I’m doing well on the manga side, catching up with books, making slow progress with the dictionary (while not really catching up).
I finished Kiyo in Kyoto a week early to have finished a volume and to reduce this week’s reading. I have a conference starting Saturday and social calendar will be quite full I think. Before that, I have three days on an island in Fiji.
renshuu book club picks updated so i read some of those, intermediate and challenge.
intermediate was a fairly simple short story about a gorilla who owns too many books and needs a solution (was okay, cute enough. full furigana) and challenge was a 50-ish pg manga about girls who make music and (major spoiler) coming to terms with the death of your partner. content warning for grief for that one. it was a bit confusing in places but it expressed its emotions pretty well. don’t know if it was intentionally written as yuri but there are Vibes. read the same author’s other work i could find, about a brother’s attempts to save his sister who’s trapped in a painting, and that was not as good, much more confusing.
today’s nhk article was this one, plus the entry on わけではない in aDoIJG.
May 5
Started reading バグ. It’s a book I saw recommended somewhere and the synopsis sounded interesting but I have no idea what to expect. Read up to 6% which is not bad at all for a first reading.
I’ve mentioned before that I don’t really do any kanji writing practice except for being able to write the names of the books I’m reading at any given time so I can write them down in my tracking notebook. Going from having to write 傲慢と善良 to just バグ has been magical.
May 6
Read 1 chapter of ハイキュー!! and continued reading バグ (6% → 12%). It’s been fun reading this so far. The mistery is being set up, but I can feel a big contrast with the previous book, probably since this one is a lot shorter so things need to advance relatively fast, plus it’s definitely a different style of book. I have to say it’s a lot better for my reading motivation this way.
Finished 擬似ハーレム5, simple and good but still chill.
Starting 甘々と稲妻 2, needed some chill cooking in my life. This is a bit harder so I do need to focus, but haven’t really had the time today, so just looking at it when I have time. It’s still reading!
back to ガリレオ and most of the way through case 1 now, one more push and i’ll definitely be done. pretty sure i’ve got a good idea of the how of this one, just waiting for clarification of why. the banter between 草薙 and 湯川 is good fun.
today’s nhk article was this one (nandenan article), plus the entries on わけがない and わけにはいかない
words that stood out
中瓶 - medium-sized bottle (usu. of beer)
宙吊り - hanging in midair, suspended in midair
孫請け - sub-sub contractor. as part of a pun with 曾孫請け as like sub-sub-sub contractor
頭を振る - to shake one’s head (in denial)
Read 1 chapter of ハイキュー!! and some more バグ (12% → 17%). I’m amazed at how fast I’m getting through this book considering I’m not dedicating that much time to it (busy times), and I stopped reading because I had to sleep, not because I got tired of reading so that’s a good sign.
Tues May 7: does not exist (srsly I just forgot with everything going on) Wed May 8: Spring ep 3 started completed, amusingly the first word of the chapter was one I’d just reviewed a few minutes earlier (最初).
Thanks! Adding that to the “to read eventually” list.
