I didn’t know enough of the regional contemporary history… (Also, just first part.)

天下一の馬
Chapter: 1/3
Next story!
This one started out normal enough, a packhorse driver is in the mountains where he meets a child cursed by a demon so now he’s part monkey-goat-boy. He’s wounded and asks for help, the packhorse-man finds the whole situation kinda weird but agrees to help. All good. Until the demon boy says that in order to get better he needs to live in the horse’s belly, seen as the horse is such a fine looking horse it’ll make him better… somehow… the horse won’t be harmed, in fact it’ll turn into a super horse while he’s sloshing around in the belly.

Another chapter down of 本好きの下剋上第一部 and the end of the first novel I’m reading in Japanese is in sight, which is a nice feeling. I’ve actually switched from Bookwalker to Rakuten (and ttsu) which means I now get a % count as well, but since I also have Bookwalker’s paginated copy still, I can flick back and forth to get actual page numbers for updates.
Also a milestone of sorts on Natively too:

Today, I began the first part of Markus’ Ascend! (See link above) Other than that, I also read one of today’s NHK Easy articles, and only one because I was looking for a manga that could fit my level and that I could potentially like. Didn’t find anything yet, though, because there aren’t that many mangas for bad people

Enjoying reading 時をかける少女. Nothing special with the story but even though it’s way easier than the other two novels I’ve read, I still don’t understand every sentences 100% without investigating the grammar a bit nor do I know all of the vocabulary. So very good practice! Although the amount of words that are in hiragana instead of in kanji are almost the ones tripping me up the most x) (へや instead of 部屋, I always read it へ first “hm someone is going somewhere” “oh no right” (also need to remember that normal Japanese is not Kansai everywhere and や most of the times is not だ but just や))

・サイレント・ウイッチ VII (34% → 41%)
There were more illustrations than usual just between the 30-40 percent of the book Things got intense. “Let’s be careful so we do not resort to violence,” says the smiling madman who is carrying an axe and is not afraid of using it.
More horsies
(Tho the story sounds…
)
The Crystal Hunters by Nathaniel French is written for people learning Japanese. I read the first few and they were okay. I’m finding native Japanese manga difficult because the grammar is really casual. I joined the Absolute Beginners Bookclub. I’m hoping that by part way through I’ll be able to understand more than just the vocabulary Let me know if you find anything good

Read episodes 27 - 29 of Sakura and Suzuki on Satorireader! Jumping from the ABBC to Satorireader always gives me such a nice and refreshing feeling. I’m so spoiled by Satorireader.
@Clovie1 @Akashelia I know you both are reading 舞妓さんちのまかないさん which includes some Kansai-ben in there. Curious what level of vocab and grammar you would recommend I try this manga out? And would you happen to know any other sources for Kansai-ben?
Feb 20
I found the Kansai-ben really intense in that series when I first started reading it, but reading along with the BBC (link) was really helpful! I think if you have questions while reading and post in those threads even now, people might answer them. Other than the Kansai-ben, I don’t personally find the series too difficult of a read (so far; I’m only on volume 2). I think you could consider trying it if you’re comfortable reading other slice-of-life manga?
As for resources, I find this chart helpful for referencing the standard dialect equivalents of some Kansai-ben expressions. The rest of the website seems pretty good too, although I haven’t explored it that much. It’s not comprehensive though (that would be really difficult), so I often google “phrase + 関西弁” when I can’t find something there or in my dictionary, to see what comes up.

A chapter of チョコっとちょこちゃん. I only have around 60 pages left of volume 1, which is very exciting!!
There are also those videos by Cure Dolly
Agreed with @Clovie1 , with the vocab sheet and the answers in the BBC thread you will learn a lot! Nothing really new in the rest of the series.
If I really struggle with a sentence, I ask an infamous chat bot to parse it and explain it for me, I’m usually satisfied with the answer

February the past weekend until now
I’ve been a bit lax about updating this thread over the weekend because I had such a busy weekend with a lot of social stuff. I read some days, mostly English and I didn’t read on other days.
Today, I decided to try the demo for Another Code on Switch in JP. It was fairly easy as far as I got, then I got stuck. I was playing in TV mode on a controller that do not have motion controls, and the game required motion controls to complete a puzzle.
My problem is that all my other Switch controllers have horrible drift (I need to send them for repairs, I don’t even think I have to pay anything but shipping, but it is still a chore that is easy to put off). So I was completely stuck.
However, I liked it well enough, and it was easy enough that I will probably get the game after I’ve gotten my drift-borked controllers fixed.

i actually read the rest of the ouran volume, they were both quite long chapters (plus some very text-heavy bonus content) but they linked together and i couldn’t not keep reading! basically didn’t read anything else tho, aside from some stuff on pixiv
today’s nhk article was this one, plus the granblue valentines thing, and the entries on そうになる and その上 in aDoIJG
seconding this site and looking up the word plus 関西弁 or 方言 method, i find it very effective. same for this video from game gengo (tho if you lived there for a year idk how useful this’ll be). his video on ni no kuni also goes into kansai-ben a bit cos one of the characters uses it.
these are probably more useful for looking stuff up than actually learning from, looking at them again. oops hopefully they can be useful in some way!
edit: nihongo no mori also have a few videos on kansai-ben
not me coming in with a second edit: this is the most straightforward site and approaches it from a base grammar level so this might be the closest thing you’re looking for (even if it’s not much for nuance). just a table and this means this and that’s it, plus some words (similar to the wikipedia page but smaller and way more approachable). it even has space for practice! they have separate pages for 大阪弁 (the one i linked)
and 京都弁 (plus others. i used it for 博多弁 and it was invaluable)

天下一の馬
Chapter: 3/3
The horse becomes super thunderhorse and does the job of ten horses, but then comes the time that the demon-child needs to… exit the horse. Since the horse has eaten lots of tasty food the demon-child has gotten fat and can’t fit through the neck (it appears he needs to be born out of the mouth), so it’s up to packhorse-man to make the horse yawn… because that’ll be big enough for him to crawl out ???
I have so many questions
Yeahhh… I’ve had to re-read a few passages just to make sure I’m understanding it right, this one got weird real fast.

Maybe read/watch more later.
Exploration and choices with earns and costs.
Almost, but I can’t win yet. Out of status and potions.
February 20
Read chapters 27 and 28 of あなたも殺人犯になれる!, read chapter 3 of ハイキュー!! and played like 15 mins of 逆転裁判. That’s actually a decent amount in total but it felt so short!
