Almost got in a decent amount of reading considering I had much free time for it.

Itโ€™s amazing how much free time you have when youโ€™re not desperately consuming manga and trying to finish JoJo parts at the same time. Played some persona 5 and read another few pages of ๅคœใฏ็Ÿญใ—ๆญฉใ‘ใ‚ˆไน™ๅฅณ. Despite how busy I was today it was nice to kind of relax study wise.

But Iโ€™m glad I did that while getting used to ๅคœใฏ็Ÿญใ—ๆญฉใ‘ใ‚ˆไน™ๅฅณโ€™s writing style and vocab. Will probably do that again.

finally went back to shimanami tasogare to finish the final volume! tbf the last volume is a lot chunkier than the other three. all the stories wrapped up fairly nicely and neatly, there were multiple gorgeous double-page spreads, and iโ€™m honestly really looking forward to rereading this series at some point down the line.

words that stood out: ใ‚ฆใ‚ฃใƒผใƒณ (vienna, trips me up every time, without fail), ๆต…ใฏใ‹ใ• (ใ‚ใ•ใฏใ‹ใ•, superficial, short-sighted, silly. the second time iโ€™ve seen a ๆต… adjective thatโ€™s not ๆต…ใ„ in this series), ้€ฑๆ˜Žใ‘ (ใ—ใ‚…ใ†ใ‚ใ‘, early the following week usu. monday)

this word always catches me out whenever i see it! i think i learned the reading before the kanji and iโ€™ve still not linked the two in my head yet

BU$TAFELLOWS :moneybag:
Short story in English :books:

Havenโ€™t read in English for like a week, so tried to use that to break through my tiredness that made me rather unemotional. Like I donโ€™t seem to feel happy, sad, or anything in between when Iโ€™m very tired/exhausted, and since I keep being an idiot when it comes to my sleep, today it was super apparent. So I thought Iโ€™d read something that I knew I liked, and it barely managed to tip me into entertainment mode.

I really hope it is just a lack of sleep, and there isnโ€™t something else. Because if Iโ€™m numbing out for other reasons, it tends to get messyโ€ฆ

Anyway, I think it is just tiredness, so why worry about the possibility that is less likely?

I also went back to chapter 3 of BU$TAFELLOWS. It is really nice to read this in bigger chunks, and closer together because it makes it more likely that Iโ€™ll remember the words I recently looked up for it when they show up again. I actually finally had the experience of a word Iโ€™d looked up many times for B$ so far finally seeming to stick, so I didnโ€™t need to look it up again. Yay.

And also looked up multiple words I thought I hadnโ€™t seen before and turns out Iโ€™d even looked them up for B$ before. :face_exhaling:

Today: Read up to page 50, finished chapter 35.

So much for the White day chapter โ€“ I couldnโ€™t help but chuckle when Sakura unknowingly kept rubbing salt into Shaolans wounds by telling him that heโ€™s such a friendly and wonderful person and that she hopes that the person he likes will like him back. :smiling_face_with_tear:

Oh wow there is lots more text on todayโ€™s page then on previous ones. Iโ€™ll do my best!

We learn the name of another city: Nerobi, where a sales person (not the person manning the bar!) comes from. I was a bit lost here, I couldnโ€™t quite parse whether it was this person that was selling tool and buying fish, or if that is something the city is known for. Iโ€™m assuming the person, because to indicate the city you would add more paricles to clarify the subject? Maybe??

Apparently no traders come here anymore because the Kiruma village is dangerous. But this particular trader wants to go there, because without competitors the price of wares will go up!

The next sentence I couldnโ€™t parse at all, not even with ichi.moeโ€™s help. It seperated parts strangely and put in two question particles in the middle of the sentence?

Anyway, here's my attempt at figuring out how to even segment this sentence

ใฟใ‚“ใช ใŒ ไฝ•(ใชใซ)ใง ใ“ใ‚“ใชใซ ๆ(ใŠใ)ใ‚Œใฆใ„ใ‚‹ ใ‹ใ‚ใ‹ใฃใฆ ใ„ใพใ™ ใ‹๏ผŸ
ใฟใ‚“ใช ใŒ: subject, everyone or everything
ไฝ•(ใชใซ)ใง: adverb, why?
ใ“ใ‚“ใชใซ: adverb, like this
ๆ(ใŠใ)ใ‚Œใฆ: conjunctive ใฆ of fear, so probably forms a compund with ใ„ใ‚‹ = to be afraid
ใ‹ใ‚ใ‹ใฃใฆ: ??? without the ใ‹ infront it could be ๅˆ†ใ‹ใฃใฆ maybe?
ใ„ใพใ™: thatโ€™s just formal ใ„ใ‚‹
ใ‹: question particle, pretty sure itโ€™s the only one in this sentence

I think the knight asks the trader if they know what there is that everyone is afraid of.

Aaaaa Iโ€™m done. This was a lot. It is way too late. I wanted to go to bed half an hour ago!!!

Yes; you know itโ€™s the person because the implied subject as set by the topic-marking ใฏ doesnโ€™t change through the sentence. In the ้“ๅ…ทใฉใ†ใใ‚’ๅฃฒใ†ใฃใฆ part the subject of โ€˜to sellโ€™ isnโ€™t stated, and so itโ€™s still the same as it was in the first part of the sentence: ๅ•†ไบบ. (In practice if you wanted to say the city was doing the trading youโ€™d probably either end the sentence and start a new one about the city, or else youโ€™d use a relative clause modifying โ€˜cityโ€™.)

You got the meaning right. I think the thing youโ€™re missing here is that verbs like ๅˆ†ใ‹ใ‚‹ can take an embedded question ending in ใ‹ to indicate what it is that we are understanding/knowing. To take a simpler example: ใชใ‚“ใฎๅ‹•็‰ฉใ‹ใ‚ใ‹ใ‚‹๏ผŸ โ€“ the inner embedded question is ใชใ‚“ใฎๅ‹•็‰ฉใ‹ โ€œwhat animal is it?โ€ and so the whole thing is โ€œdo you know what animal it is?โ€

This is a general way you can express embedded questions with ใ‹, and it works with other verbs too, like ๆ•™ใˆใ‚‹ or ่žใ. This page has some examples.

Day 43
For a change I read more of Tsugumomo vol. 4. I was lucky there wasnโ€™t that much text. There arenโ€™t many manga left to read therefore I can focus more on the other things in my backlog soon.

Today I read the next chapter of Teasing Master Takagi-san.
I thought this chapter was quite a cute one.

Didnโ€™t think this expression would be so literally incorporated  Thereโ€™s a variant of this expression in english that I picked up somewhere but really like: โ€œfeed two birds with one sconeโ€. I wonder if you could render that into japanese and have it be recognizableโ€ฆ ไธ€้คŒไบŒ้ณฅ๏ผŸไธ€้ฃดไบŒ้ณฅ๏ผŸ

A bit better today; I played some more BU$TAFELLOWS but Iโ€™m still recovering from busyness so I got tired really fast :joy: off to bed!

Did some reading from my graded reader and read chapter 2 of Yotsubato (40 minutes in total). Honestly thought that since itโ€™s a kidโ€™s book I would find it hard but boring since Iโ€™m just using it for practice before diving into the ones I really want to read. However, it is so darn funny that I may purchase book 2.

โš”๏ธ YAIBA Volume 1 (25% โžจ 36%)

Considering that ๅๆŽขๅตใ‚ณใƒŠใƒณ is fairly easy for me, and ใพใ˜ใฃใๅฟซๆ–— isnโ€™t too difficult, I figured ๏ผน๏ผก๏ผฉ๏ผข๏ผก would be similar in difficulty. As it turns out, itโ€™s quite a bit more effort to get through as it uses many words I donโ€™t know. It seems thereโ€™s a vast difference between knowing about 73% of the words in a series (ๅๆŽขๅตใ‚ณใƒŠใƒณ) versus knowing only about 64% (๏ผน๏ผก๏ผฉ๏ผข๏ผก).

Although Iโ€™m sure Iโ€™ve seen it earlier in this series, this is the first time Iโ€™ve taken notice of this kanji in this font in something Iโ€™m reading:

A non-impressive ~10 pages yesterday. My plan had been to finish the book, but in the end I didnโ€™t have time to read that much. I hope I can finish it today, and continue with ใƒฆใƒผใƒˆใƒญใƒ‹ใ‚ซใฎใ“ใกใ‚‰ๅด tomorrow, but both days are expected to be busy, so weโ€™ll see how it goes.

 Thatโ€™s a sweet expression for sure, and much friendlier than the original. But surely a scone would suffice for a dozen birds at least? (or are we talking ostriches? :eyes:)

I hadnโ€™t learned about embedded question sentences, thank you! I think I kept coimg acros them in other books, so Iโ€™m gonna go back to it and try again with this knowledge.

Harry Potter Book 1 finished!!! I am a little bit proud of myself  Now I am motivated to jump straight into book 2.

Btw. I notice me doing less WaniKani lessons and reviews since reading that much. But its fine, I guess overall I learn more efficiently that way.

Word of the day:
็จฒๅฆป (ใ„ใชใšใพ) - rice plant wife? It actually means lightning bolt. But why?

Happy reading!
