So I only managed to read one page of コンビニ人間 again.

Another emergency call in today and this time I missed my morning coffee so I ended up with a really bad headache by the time I got to go home. Even playing animal crossing was kinda strenuous for today, but I had two big wins, so it was worth playing . I finally completed all the fossils, and paid off my house! e+ the total house loan is cheaper than the US gamecube version because there’s an extra loan for the private island after you finish your house upgrades, but still! meaningful progress.

JoJo was incredibly even less awkward than I thought it would be. Like the whole focus in the bath scene is on following where the tape is, so the only time that there’s total frontal, your (or at least my) mind is on is finding the tape. The canon answer is stupid though if it’s a vhs tape and it looks like a vhs tape! like those shits are big, no way it’s getting hidden like that. vhs-c or something smaller would be more believable, but it’s got regular vhs features so I guess not. Also, I didn’t really start it, but the next arc is Cheap Trick! I forgot it’s this late in the series. I really like the premise and I’ve seen it in the anime and live-action now, so looking forward to reading the original version.

Yesterday, the reviews sapped my energy so I didn’t get to Ouran Hoping to change that today! Or at least read fudanshi and Super

Quelle tragédie! My animal crossing save file was corrupted when I went to boot it today. Thankfully, I had just backed it up a few days ago when I was setting up the other wii (my cable setup was getting rather unruly, so I hacked a wii that had gamecube support to declutter a bit), so I only lost 2-3 days of progress. Back up your files, folks Unfortunately, that means I lost my final fossil again awefsdfasdf, and since today is the last day of the month it’s 福引きの日 which means I can’t sell anything to pay off the rest of my loan again.

September wrap-up:

W o w I did a lot this month

Smashed my total page record, easily broke 100 pages/day on average, and only missed a single day of reading something non-fiction. On top of that, almost a half hour of average listening per day (not even counting music!).

The big one for me is almost 30 extra hours of playing games in japanese that I wouldn’t have been spending doing any japanese with, probably. Squeezed almost an extra hour per day of extra exposure to japanese in that would’ve probably been 0 japanese time otherwise.

In april, when I made it my goal to read all 14 volumes of 四月は君の噓, it was a struggle to manage to do just that in the month. This month, I read all 14 volumes of ヨコハマ買い出し紀行, 8 other volumes of manga, and a whole bunch of other stuff on the side!

It’s really, really nice to be able to share to you guys since I know you can relate. I don’t feel like I can share that with my circle of friends, colleagues or family. She has a different fish name on her shirt in every chapter! For someone who hates bathing she sure seems to love fish I thought that might be a fun word of the week type thing for the ABBC pace if it got picked there.

Many of them I already knew from どうぶつの森, especially this, uh, exemplary individual who I definitely never release back into the seas:

Yeah I think both those manga are great picks for club reading, because of not really having continuity so it’s fine to read it once a week and forget all about it in between! Plus it’s light and funny (and cute)

I’m not very well, so I went for some of the easier books that I’m currently reading today. I read a chapter of Chiisana Mori no Ookami-chan, and a chapter of Rojika to Rakkasei.

3 more volumes read this month bringing this years total to 30 so far.
Focusing on some more advanced material this year has meant that my count at the end of this year will be much lower than last year, but thats fine by me. While I’m reading more slowly, its cool that I can choose to read things now based on what I think I will enjoy reading, rather than what I think will be simple enough for me to understand.

I’ve fallen behind the IBC Primer club, which is a shame - but I knew when I started it that it was an ambitious choice for me, and I’m still enjoying reading it even though I’m now doing it on my own at a slower pace.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations, support and advice again throughout this challenge - and of course big thanks to @windupbird for organising everything!

These past few months had many things come up to reduce my reading time, but I think I did a decent job of it.

• Being a single volume, this one is paced quickly in what happens. It feels like it could have benefitted from being stretched out into a 6+ volume series.

• Completed volumes 2 to 8
• I burned out on this one from reading through it often, but I look forward to continuing it later down the line.

• Has less of a focus on sports than I expected, which works well for me.

• Don’t let the BBC-level early volumes fool you. This series gets more difficult as it goes!

I got tired of doing daily updates because I had come to think of them as a pain, plus I felt I’d been spending way too much on the forums lately so I decided to take a break, although I’d still planned on keeping up with this thread at least and maybe the book clubs… and then I didn’t. I only remembered to update my home post whenever I finished a book and sometimes not even then either, but I’m pretty sure I’ve still got everything down, and I didn’t read anyone else’s updates until I came here to write this today.

Book club books I finished the volume I was on—though most (all?) of them ahead of the club’s schedule—and then surprise surprise without the scheduling and seeing the notifications from the threads completely forgot about and did not read even one single volume more of any of them despite all but one of them being manga I very much want to read. I even bought more GSNK! (I also bought other shiny new manga though… And shiny new novels… And my 積読 pile is back to being larger than my 読んだ本 pile even before factoring in my 読んでる本…)

I still read every day during this challenge, and this month I reached 300 days read consecutively and 600 total days read (at least as logged on Bookmeter; I didn’t start tracking until mid-Jan last year, so that’s 3.5 months for which I’ve got no info) —as of today the counts are 308 consecutive days and 613 days total. Which means that if I keep it up into November, I’ll have read in Japanese every day for an entire year straight! (English is an entirely different matter, though.)

Summer Challenge Summary

I finished a whole 12 novels these past three months! Two were book club books, one of them finally おばちゃんたちのいるところ, which felt like I’d been sporadically making my way through for forever but was actually less than a year. I didn’t actually dislike it as much as that may make it seem (I just have zero sense of time), but the stories were still very hit-or-miss with me. The other was あん, which was all right; it was better toward the beginning but started losing me by the end. I ended up dropping Tatami Galaxy out of a combination of the difficulty of the text and my hatred of the MC making me loathe to pick it up (if it had only been one or the other, I still might have made it through, though difficult prose with likeable characters has a higher chance than easy prose with unlikeable characters), and after forcing my way through Penguin Highway which I’d bought before that, I’ve decided that I am never touching anything by Morimi Tomihiko again. I don’t know if most of his MCs aren’t actually insufferable and I was just unlucky, but I don’t care to find out. In better news, though, I read 3/5 volumes of DOUBLES!!, and while it won’t be overtaking 2.43 as my favorite series or anything, I am still enjoying it and I love the characters, and it’s a relatively easy read too. (I even ended up writing a fic for it, and starting another one. In English though, of course.) I’m definitely gonna be seeking out more of Amasawa Natsuki’s スポーツ小説.

And despite not having any book club novels going currently, I’m still going into the Autumn Challenge with 5 books that I’m in the middle of, because apparently I’m incapable of having a reasonable number of books in my 読んでる pile. Granted, I’m not necessarily actively working on all of them, but still. 5? I think I need to finish two before starting a new one, but I also don’t think that’s gonna happen lol Especially since I am absolutely planning on starting DOUBLES!!④ tomorrow and there’s no way I’ll be finishing anything else before then.

I also finished 31 volumes of manga this challenge, which I guess isn’t that bad considering how much more novel-reading I’ve been doing.

Seasons says October is 神無月(かんなづき), or the month without gods. They all go to Izumo Taisha. October 1st is about 神有(かみあり)月(づき), or the month of gods, as it’s called in Izumo because that’s where all the gods are lol. It seems there’s stages to the month in which the gods are absent, traveling, and transferring. I think it’s fascinating though because of these college lecture recordings I listened to. The professor said that we can infer that because of Japanese mythology and this tradition that in ancient Japan, Izumo had held quite a bit of power. He suggested that during the Nara period I think, that Nara and Izumo had probably fought each other and that while Nara won, it probably wasn’t the most decisive victory so they needed to give Izumo concessions in order to placate them and prevent a sequel to the war. He said that part of these concessions seemed cultural and explains why gods from Izumo were accepted into the canon in Nara. After all this makes a lot of sense because why on Earth might they otherwise decide that gods leave the rest of Japan for a meeting in the middle of nowhere? So it must have been an important place at one time.

Fudanshi was wild. If you don’t plan to read it, unspoil for a funny/morbid story. So this story is about a family of fudanshi. 1 dad, 2 sons. A while before the story, the mom had died. One of the sons asks his dad about his mom since he just remembers them fighting a lot right before she died and the dad burned/tossed all her stuff after she died… Turns out she died from overwork. She promised too many doujin for summer comiket. They’d been fighting because he was trying not to convince her to do so much work. And she asked him to dispose of all her BL if she died. The other son hears this and says instead of cleaning the mom’s grave, they should go to summer comiket because that’s probably where her ghost would go.

Super was pretty cute. It’s a good manga for silly warm fuzzies.

I got in just the one JoJo chapter before bed. I wanted to read Ouran , but I prioritized my grammar reviews… I didn’t finish them and my accuracy was shite. I’ll definitely get to Ouran today though.

All done! I feel like I did pretty well considering how crazy busy my summer ended up being. My expectations were much lower. I’m too tired to count up my stats for books this time. I think it was less than Spring though, it was still making a good dent in my backlog. Looking forward to doing better in the fall.

I’m still reading, probably not every day but that’s ok. For this challenge, I think I’ll change the format of my reports somewhat: I will not report on what I read but what I am planning to read.
