I tried to read at work today, but I forgot to charge the kindle so I only made it through a short bit before it started turning off randomly. I read part of volume10 of takagi san, and then when I got home felt like trying out goodbye eri. Had been putting off reading it until the BBC polls were done, in case it won those, but it wasn’t even remotely near the top so I think I’ll probably be fine reading it on my own It’s a oneshot from the author of chainsaw man, and I’ve heard only exceptional things.

• からかい上手の高木さん volume 10 - looks like I made it to page 101 before the kindle died. Eventually I’ll catch up to the club, mark these words. Charged the kindle and finished it after dinner
• さよなら絵梨 60 pages - this story is so bizarre, but I just couldn’t stop reading it. Excellent stuff. I actually had to tear myself away to go make dinner, and really want to keep reading later even though I have other stuff to do tonight
• aDoBJG - うちに, は, わ, ～は～だ,～は～が, はいけない, 分かる - somehow I didn’t realize how close I was to being done lol. Only about 40 pages left of entries, I will probably, at long last, finish the basic volume sometime this week!

• 7 pages of 強者の同盟, finishing ch 2 and leaving off on pg 55. The summary for this story suggested there’d be a bit of romance, and I’m definitely not liking the possibility of it being between Jungo and Akao. She’s such a little b-word. I was hoping Hacchi. She and Jungo would be cute. Although this part is a flashback to middle school and it was clear in ch 1 that nothing’s going on between him and Akao a year and a half later (also that her attitude hasn’t improved a bit and in fact has possibly worsened), so maybe there’s hope yet.
  Maybe.
  (I dunno how high those hopes are.)
  (Well, with any luck I’ll get some ideas for Jun/Hacchi fic)

it was a good length so i did the entire 前篇(ぜんペん) of case 4! oh boy!! shoutout to the work done on the sprite animations, they’re always excellent but the ones here specifically are fantastic.

today’s nhk article was this one, and today’s fate episode was ルナール’s summer one. don’t really have anything to say about either of them. watched more y5 too.

I’ve taken it pretty easy this past week with sometimes only reading a little of a manga that’s easier for me. But I still got every day! It’s been a nice change and feeling more accomplished with how few lookups I have to do for flying witch.

Still planning on mostly working through my easier stuff this coming week as well. Though next week, I’m going out of town on a work trip, so we’ll see if I can keep up the streak. I think I can. I should have time before bed, but we’ll see. I’m trying not to pressure myself about it.

Words of the day

• 矢先(やさき)に = just about to. Well yeah, a grammar point.
• ～初頭(しょとう) = the beginning of. Sometimes without の.
• 入(い)れ歯(ば) = denture; false tooth. Another word is 義歯(ぎし).
• 先送(さきおく)り = postponing; putting off
• 言(い)い回(まわ)し = phrasing, e.g. in a roundabout way
• 筋張(すじば)った = brawny; robust. Also just becoming tense (筋張(すじば)る).
• 老(お)いさらばえる = to become feeble and ugly with age. Just make it 老(お)いる + さらば (despite the etymology).
• 身重(みおも) = pregnant
• 中退(ちゅうたい) = dropping out of a school during a semester
• 入念(にゅうねん) = scrupulous. Just Chinese version of 念入(ねんい)り.
• 大荒(おおあ)れ = great storm. Just like 大嵐(おおあらし).

• 斜(なな)め読(よ)み = skim reading. Reading for the storyline.
• 硬骨(こうこつ) = firm, uncompromising character. Also hard bony fishes (not cartilaginous fishes).
• 重厚(じゅうこう) = serious; solemn; substantial
• 感傷的(かんしょうてき) = sentimental. Feels 感情的(かんじょうてき), but also some tear-jerking “wound” (傷(きず)).

It’s exactly as @meeta says! While the い from いる or いく may drop, the あ from e.g. あげる and お from e.g. おく will sometimes merge into the て to make た and と respectively

～おう forms (だろう, でしょう, そう、行こう, etc.) will often shorten in speech, either by dropping the う or by turning it into a っ before a particle that allows it—usually か as here, but I’ve also come across the I think dialectal ～おっせ a few times with the volitional form of verbs (although I guess that’s not exactly shortening depending how you look at it)

(Update: After coming across it a few more times, I think I can confidently say that 〜おっせ is the equivalent of 〜おうぜ. And every character I’ve seen use it was speaking Fukuiben.)
