Thoughts

Fun read, when it starts you can’t tell at all that the story is going to be about a witch. But I knew it would (as I have read the title of the manga ), so it was fun to see how it would be announced. Doesn’t seem to be a secret at all
Also nice that I have just read in 壁の穴 about exactly this scene, don’t know if I would have completely understood it otherwise:

Day 41! Continuing 家庭用安心坑夫, managed to make it to the section break at ~13.5% and only ~8700 characters on day 2 of reading now. Ugh this book is a pain sometimes.

“清潔なタオルと清潔な着替えを用意する、先に髪をブラシで梳かしておくことによって汚れの何割かが落ちるというので、よく梳かしたうえでクリップでまとめる、化粧水とボディオイルは濡れた肌に迅速に塗布せねばならないというからすべて洗面台に出しておく、ついに風呂場へたどり着いてからも、心臓に遠いところからそっと身体を濡らす、慎重に湯船に浸かりそこで十分ほどじっとしている、ふたたび湯船を上がり髪を濡らすのだがここで予洗いといわれる工程を丁寧にこなすとこれだけでまた汚れの何割かが落ちるので念入りに、そうしてようやくシャンプーを手に取ることが許される、液体を直接頭皮にのせてはいけないので忘れず手のなかで泡状に、生え際頭頂部襟足とかきまぜてマッサージするように地肌を洗う、ここから泡立てていたのの倍の時間をかけて洗い流す必要があるがここでようやく九割の汚れが落ちることになり……”

Other than what seems to be the author’s favorite word, おびただしい, there’s not much repetition either, just new words constantly. I guess I’m hanging in there, I’m mostly figuring it all out, but I get like worn out and irritable every time I read it lol, though I’m pretty sure the book itself is fine or pretty good if I had better reading abilities. Life is stressful recently too so maybe that’s related.

Looking forward to a break for VN days now, maybe Fatal Twelve won’t feel so bad.

I was planning to read a lot of samples today, but I soon realized something I knew but had forgotten: reading samples is exhausting. The hardest part of a book is always the beginning, because exciting as it is, it’s also uncharted territory. Samples are also not short (usually a 10% of the book or so?), so quite the time investment, for something that I don’t necessarily plan to continue reading right away. I’ve been actively reading three books already, and added another two by reading samples (I decided to continue with かにみそ), plus another three in the backburner, well, I finally realized I may be spreading myself a little thin, so I decided to not read any more samples for now, and instead focus on what I already have.

…which is why I started 家庭用安心坑夫. (what do you mean, this makes no sense?!)

Okay, so, plans for (the rest of) August:

• Keep up with the club for 木洩れ日に泳ぐ魚
• Finish both きつねのはなし and かにみそ

I’ve been enjoying マダムが教えてくれたこと so far, in particular because I encounter quite a bit of katakana that I have to look up. Which I haven’t seen that often so far in my readings, but katakana can be misleading/hard at times, so it’s nice to practice. Plus, it focus on daily situations (fashion, drinking tea) for now, which is also useful vocabulary.

I also read the first chapter of a manga I got called うちのちいさな女中さん. It’s about a 14-years old girl who becomes a live-in maid in the house of a (female) translator, and it’s set in the beginning of the Showa era. I’m guessing the focus will be on the relationship between the two characters. The atmosphere reminds me a bit of 舞妓さんちのまかないさん; they are both calming reads. I also really like the art. I expected to only look at a couple of pages, but ended up reading the whole chapter…

Tell me about it… I’ve got kindle unlimited for (at least) the next few months, and I keep seeing titles (mostly manga) that look interesting and that I want to give a try… and suddenly I have 5+ samples to look at. Of course it’s fun, but the whole process of trying and figuring out if it is something that would work for you takes time and energy. I’m glad you were able to set a boundary and limit your sample reading for now

reading samples is exhausting

Oh yeah it is. To be honest I almost never do it for that reason; I just commit to things on a whim. Guess that’s how I get in situations like this where this book is frustrating my Japanese abilities, but I haven’t quit so maybe it’ll be a good thing haha. I dunno, I’m used to things sometimes taking a while to hook me so I’d rather give them the whole time unless I end up truly unable to continue, but that rarely happens for me with books.

Being off work and stuck at home for so long has really thrown off my sleep a bit, I ended up not being able to sleep last night and got back up. I didn’t feel like reading any more march, so I decided to sit down and just play Stargazer until I got tired. Several hours later… I was done with the game Just gonna roll this into the next day’s post because most of it was after midnight

Read:

• Stargazer-少女は星の夢を見る- 22k characters, lost track of chapters - Probably not going to go back to the save points for the other endings because even though I got the 幸せ ending, I dont think I could take getting any of the bad endings with how bittersweet the “good” ending was. The game ends on a to be continued, but it was indie published in 2014 and there are no other games from that developer, so that’s probably all she wrote for this story. Pretty cute, I liked the art style a lot, and the language was relatively easy. It was a bit longer and more involved than the other short VN i played in japanese already, but not a huge 30+ hour project to read like some are. This game has been sitting on my taskbar for months, so it’s nice to finally get around to finishing it
• aDoBGJ - ところだ
• 3月のライオン just a bit. sometimes this series really just throws some stuff at you and it’s kinda hard to keep up lol. Even without the shogi columns this is still definitely on the more text dense and harder side of the manga I’ve read
• 千星 亜乃山に行く - 10k characters (end) - I was scrolling through the list of easy and short visual novels on jpdb. Turns out finding something that is a) Short, b) relatively highly rated, c) free, and d) SFW turned out to be pretty hard. Even though this one is entirely SFW, it turns out it was kind of just a bonus for another longer series that is very NSFW. Cute lil story, a lot of slang

Something that made me happy recently is that I found I was able to smoothly read the hand-written author’s notes (the sidebars that take up a third of the page) from Skip Beat! When I encountered them previously, I would try to read a bit and then decide to skip it once it got to be too much, but for the first time yesterday, I tried to read it, and then found that I could actually read all of it without straining myself too much. I think because there’s so much handwritten text even within the manga itself, I’ve gotten more and more used to reading this mangaka’s handwriting!

So far, (fullish spoilers up to 11% or so, the sample really):
The ugly part: The protagonist talks about pulling legs off insects when he was young, and how he knows he’ll grow tired of the crab like with everything else, and when this happens he’ll either take it back to the beach or take it apart(!?!). And then he talks about how we always choose weaker animals that we can dominate as pets, and how it’s nice to know we can kill them easily any time we like But then he goes on to say that he was soon proven wrong on that.
The fun part: Meanwhile the crab eats voraciously and grows and grows. The protagonist gets a job so he can provide for the crab He starts noticing strange things, like objects being in a different position to where he left them, or the TV volume being at a different setting, etc. It was the crab, of course. When the crab starts talking to him (learned speaking and reading from watching TV, apparently), he’s not even surprised. He loves hanging out with the crab, they have the greatest conversations.

At this stage, the book reminds me a little of the beginning of Parasyte, where the alien hand tried to educate himself by reading books and everything on the internet, and then debated human nature with the boy. Rather cute.

The past few days, I made my way slowly through Making Sense of Japanese, and I dunno if I’m just less of a beginner by now than the intended audience, but honestly I found Rubin rather obnoxious. Including his insistence on only using romaji. I was honestly surprised to see kanji and kana in the final section.

Amazon actually gave me proper recs for once instead of books that are or were once on one of my wishlists that it’s passing off as recs, and I’m actually interested in 2/3 of them: a tennis LN series (and it doesn’t say who the illustrator is on the cover or in the preview, but it looks like ひのた’s style, so I was interested in it for that, too) and a soccer LN series.

I actually have a pretty long backlog of books I wanna read previews for but I haven’t touched it in forever except to add to it lol. It’s easy to read previews of manga as soon as I come across them, but novels are a whole different beast (and I dunno if phone, iPad, or laptop is most annoying, but they’re all worse than actually having the book in my hands), so I’m surprised I read 2 today, even if they are new ones and thus didn’t reduce the backlog any.

• 14 pages of ガールズ・ブルー, leaving off on pg 130. Well I figured out why 小野先生 in Battery is called 小町 by some of the students. 小野小町 (おののこまち) was a waka poet renowned for her beauty, and 小町 apparently now is a synonym for feminine beauty.
  アンビリーバボー. I’m used to seeing random English make its way into Japanese, but that one’s hilarious for some reason.
  Mao, our MC Riho’s lil bro, 憧れるs Kisaragi, one of Riho’s best friends (and apparently not the one one would expect to be 憧れるd between him and his older brother), and there’s a festival tonight and he was planning on staying home since he’s always hated crowds, but when Kisaragi invites him, he hesitates for hardly a second before agreeing.

The book dates from the era (lasted up til at least the mid 1990s, I think) when the standard for most Japanese learning material was to use romaji, either exclusively or as one option together with kanji/kana, to make it available to a wider audience. The Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar is also from that time period and also uses romaji. I’d bet this was his publisher’s decision more than Rubin’s.
