I’m trying to get really into JoJo again. It’s going well this weekend, I think mostly because it’s getting into the climax. Once I finish Part 2, I think I’ll have an easier time getting into Part 4.

• くすねる(.) = to swipe in by trickery
• なまる = to become dull = 鈍(なま)る.   腕(うで)がなまる in context.
• 和(なご)む = to calm down
• 煮詰(につ)める = to boil down to; to reach a conclusion
• 身(み)ごもる = to become pregnant = 身籠(みごも)る
• 身震(みぶる)い = shudder; trembling. Perhaps to compare with 武者震(むしゃぶる)い, which is of different cause.
• 地響(じひび)き = subterranean tremor. The roaring of 地震(じしん).
• 間際(まぎわ) = just at the point before. Perhaps easier to understand if written 真際(まぎわ).
• 窮乏(きゅうぼう) = destitution. Related words include 困窮(こんきゅう).
• 下克上(げこくじょう) = inferiors overthrowing their superiors = 下剋上(げこくじょう)
• 不可思議(ふかしぎ) = something incomprehensible; mysterious. Like both 不思議(ふしぎ) and 不可解(ふかかい).
• 矢文(やぶみ) = letter affixed to an arrow . It’s Kun reading of 文(ふみ).
• 土産話(みやげばなし) = tales of one’s travels. Totally forgotten that it is お土産(みやげ).
• 勾配(こうばい) = an inclination; slope. Similar words include 傾斜(けいしゃ),   斜面(しゃめん), which have the 斜(なな)め Kanji.
• 均衡(きんこう) = equilibrium. Forgot the reading of second Kanji, but it is actually a 一行(いっこう) with a fish () in-between.
• 剣戟(けんげき) = weapons / sword fight
• 早計(そうけい) = rash; hasty = 早(はや)まった計画(けいかく)
• 一泡吹(ひとあわふ)かせる = to give someone a surprise
• 馬脚(ばきゃく)を現(あらわ)す = to reveal one’s true nature. From seeing horse’s legs in a play.

Days 14 and 15 Progress:

Whenever I browse twitter my feed is always filled to the brim with gacha webcomics… and sometimes people will try to translate them but almost all of the translations I’ve seen have been pretty bad? Stiff language, excessively literal, often straight up translating things incorrectly (大目(おおめ) was translated into ‘big eyes’, for instance…) I’d have thought that with such popular IPs there’d be a greater abundance of translator capital but I suppose there’s a limit to what people are willing to do for free…

Word of the Day: お開(ひら)き - breakup (of a ceremony, wedding, party, meeting, etc.); closure. Very confusing and cursed, but I took a quick look at an explanation and apparently it’s because of superstition- saying 終(お)わり or おしまい at a wedding is a 忌詞(いみことば), or taboo word and is an omen of future breakup (you might’ve seen something similar in Japanese media with people trying to avoid saying 落(お)ちる around someone prepping for exams). So お開(ひら)き ended up becoming a euphemism instead and refers to the opening up of the future ahead of them, or something like that.

A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar : あげる2
同居人はひざ、時々、頭のうえ。: ca 20 pages
ふらいんぐうぃっち : first chapter

Read one more entry in the dictionary. And then I spent some time auditioning manga for the extensive reading slot that Komi-san had occupied.

First, I tried 同居人はひざ、時々、頭のうえ。but I would have needed to do regular lookups to follow what was being said, so I had to say no. I would pick Yotsubato (which I adore!) but some chapters can be super lookup heavy and then not much at all for the next, so I wanted to see if I could find something else I owned that would probably be a little more even in difficulty.

So second thing I tried was ふらいんぐうぃっち which I could read through without doing lookups and get slightly better understanding than the gist. And because it was a previous book club, I’ll probably read through the threads and get an even better understanding after finishing each chapter. ^^

I would have read some other stuff (in English probably), but I had a meeting with my neighbors that took up two hours (I thought it’d take like one, silly me), so I’m tired now and I’ll be playing games instead. xD

今日は、Genki2で新し単語を勉強して、シロクマカフェを二章読んでいました。「Game Gengo」の動画、「フィナルファンタジーX」の3部を待ちます。楽しみです！

二ヶ月後で、JLPT N4をします。こわい！！

名探偵コナン vol. 1 (p. 117 → 132)
I have not much to say today. Again I had not so much time to read today (thanks to Ryza ). But I finished another chapter of Conan. And since I had not so much time, I did not look up any kanji/words. And surprisingly I realized that I wouldn’t have to look up so many anyways. I understood everything just fine it feels good to realize that I make progress!

Things got very exciting there at the end I almost flew out of my chair. Just the epilogue left now. I don’t have time to list up words, I’m late, I have an assignment to do (I couldn’t put down book until now). Words can wait until tomorrow.

I need to make some time to finish up komi but i keep getting sucked into ylia I literally just pick it up, flip it open and start reading a page without realizing it sometimes. This is, objectively, a good thing, but it does get in the way of some other stuff I need to do

This thread is so active I can’t keep up with it. But, just stopping by to say so far I’m failing at this challenge. I’m not counting things that I read out in the wild, like signs and menus etc, just when I sit down to read in a focused way, and so far this month I’ve done that… 3 times. But still, my reading is getting a bit faster, I picked up a manga that had been sitting on my shelf for a while, and before I knew it I had finished it. Debated picking up the next volume, but I think I’ll finish the other stuff I’ve got first.
