I finished reading あなたに恋してもいいですか and it was just okay. Not a book I’d recommend but it was very short and easy to read, so it was a good confidence booster.

I’ll look for something else to read later today on the side for when I’m not doing the 9-nine club reading. Seeing people talk about 推し、燃ゆ kind of makes me want to pick it up again but I read the first 15~ pages back in September of last year and it was too difficult for me to really enjoy it. I’ll look through the stuff I own and see what peaks my interest.

The con was a lot of fun too!

Con stuff

It was a nice surprise to find some Shinymas stuff at the con. I had to buy the Rinze figure as soon as I saw it. The artbook is cute too, its from the first year anniversary back in 2019 so it’s all older stuff but I’ve always loved all the art in the game. There’s some staff interviews in the back of the book that I’ll give a read later too.

I was actually surprised there wasn’t more リコリス・リコイル stuff at the con considering how popular the anime was I couldn’t find the LN there but I bought all the manga that is out for it.
I did manage to find some K-on stuff there that I wanted to buy but it was far more expensive than everything else. They had a deluxe CD set thing there for K-on but it was well over $200. Maybe if I see it again there next year I’ll consider it

What short(-ish) manga series should I read

I’m glad to see Girl Friends is winning! It’s probably my favorite manga ever. I read it like a decade ago (in English) so I’ve forgotten most of the details by now but I’ve been considering re-reading it in jp for a while now. I hope you like it if it ends up winning your poll

Also started playing Mysteria Occult Shadows for PC. Some of the language in that games is ridiculous but the game should be pretty short. Probably won’t take that long to finish it.

• あざとい = cunning; pushy. Feels like an 亜(あ) way that is also 聡(さと)い.
• 癒(い)える = to recover. I realized about 癒(い)やす, but fail to guess a reading for this one.
• 屠(ほふ)る = to slaughter. Has Furigana. With the same theme, 屠畜(とちく),   屠殺(とさつ)
• 主立(おもだ)った = leading (personnel)
• 生(い)き様(ざま) = way of living. With Rendaku. There is also 死(し)に様(ざま).
• 紅白試合(こうはくじあい) = contest between two groups. With Rendaku.

Jumping onto this one a little late, but better late than never! I’m signed up for the N4 test in July this year so I need to get on with reading and listening. I’ve made a start with reading Shirokuma cafe and have been reading Web News Easy every day this month so far. It’s getting easier with each article, but I’m not quite sure what to move onto next for more of a challenge!

ハピネス vol. 1 (p. 89 - p. 195) finished

I finished the first volume today. It really is quite an easy read (mostly because there is not much to read ).
I think story wise it won’t be my favorite manga, but I’ll keep reading at least the three free volumes. And after that I will decide if I want to continue…

4月10日

ハピネス vol. 2 (p. 19 - p. 195) finished
I only had to look up a few words/kanji in the whole volume. That’s quite nice for a change

999 (end of scene 4 & beginning of scene 5 - ~1h30min)
It is still the most challenging reading material for me at the moment. I have to look up so many kanji/words. And I realized that I have less problem understanding what is being said, when there is dialogue. And the narrative text is the one responsible for my slow progress.
And scene 4 wasn’t done after 2 more sentences (as I thought the last time I had to stop reading). I needed another 1h15min to finish that scene (together that would be 2h45min just for one scene… ).

Have you considered giving a book a try? I mean those things with just text and no images It will still be quite hard at N4 (gets better from N3 onwards so hang in there!) but if you have a look at the book clubs in the Absolute Beginner club (or if you’re in for a challenge, the Beginner club), there you can find a ton of explanations and answers to pretty much every question. And if it’s still too hard after a while, there’s nothing wrong with pausing it for a bit.

I read a lot of sentences from Kanji Study and came across some really interesting words!

Also read the 3rd episode from Sakura and Suzuki on Satori Reader! was surprised because it’s way easier compared to Kona’s Adventures or Jam Maker.

I’m not too keen about the story so I didn’t bother checking it out, but I had to continue because 1) it’s a good confidence booster and 2) I want to learn a lot of vocab and phrases young adults use.

Also came across a lot of unlocked and apprentice-level kanji from WK so that was realllyy very rewarding!

some interesting words from KS and SR

• びしょびしょ - (onomatopoeic or mimetic word) soaked, drenched, sopping, soppy, wet.
• 入金 - deposit, payment, money received, money due
• 目下 - at present, now
• 目上 - superiors, senior
• 口止め - forbidding to speak, muzzling someone, bribing into secrecy
• 口止め料 - hush money
• 方がいい - “had better” or “had better not”
• 恋しい - yearned for, miss
• 連絡 - contacting, getting in touch, communication, call

Plans for the week:

I am hoping to finish 水たまり today. Then I’ll see what to do with 理由 - the prologue started dense but then went ok, but now we have the full backstory in chapter 1, and it is pretty dense and tough, and I’m reading this on paper so lookups are not as easy… Luckily the author doesn’t use many kanji I don’t know, so it’s still manageable so far…
I also want to clean up my pile of started books a little bit. Maybe I should give 糞尿譚 another shot? I hope it would be a bit easier now after all the conversations I read recently…

Komi-san 2 : 123 → 189 (end of volume 2)
The Practice by Seth Godin : 0 → 10

Ended up reading five chapters of Komi-san. I kinda use watching the anime as a check on my understanding since I read this extensively (basically I look up very little) and sometimes I’m a bit disappointed in my understanding but mostly it is fine. After reading 2 chapters I decided I could probably watch another episode of the anime. But I was mid-episode when it wanted to cover the next chapter from where I stopped. So paused the episode and read the chapter, then went back to the anime.

And because I’d flipped through the last few chapters to see how interesting they looked (physical is so useful sometimes!), the last two had looked really interesting, so I read them. And in the last chapter of volume 2 I saw かしら (mentioned for all of you fellow dictionary club readers). ^^

So yeah, kinda accidentally read the rest. I only own one more Komi-san volume, but thankfully I have a few other slice of life manga that can take Komi’s slot when I finish that. So basically I’ll have three Japanese reads at once: hard read, story read (hard is also a story read), and something easy and episodic (likely to be slice of life).

Started The Practice by Seth Godin, today. He never disappoints, but this is not the kind of book to read quickly, I think. Probably easier to digest and think over it in smaller sessions. So I expect I will only read a few pages each time.

I’m still leaving it open, so please vote to help me pick my next read if you haven’t already. xD I’ll probably close it in a couple of days (possibly tomorrow).

@pm215 Did you watch the qualifier for the new Blizt tourney? It was quite crazy. A good qualifier seed perhaps, but I missed the ability to figure out logic more (just too many items in path locations).

@Redglare Same artist?! Woot. I’m not a huge BL reader anymore either. Well, I never read a ton because expensive to buy manga, but certainly more before. If I can remember, I’ll let you know if they hold up!

@AzusaChan Now I really wonder where I heard about it. It was probably recommended way back in my slice of life manga recommendation thread. So many seems to like Girl Friends, so that makes me a lot more interested in it.

I’m not the best at figuring it out either, but at least I can usually guess. Not this time though, when every path location just gave and gave and gave, the many possibilities basically ended up with my head saying: It can basically be anywhere, and I’m not sure I can narrow it down much more than that. I also aren’t able to keep track of which hints belong to which path, and this seed just made that worse.

If even the founder (Elagatua, not correctly spelt I suspect) is at a loss, I think that is a pretty good indication that the seed was chaos.

If it had a 朗読 I’d totally do it, but old text like that can be such a slog and I don’t have the time for it right now. Last I checked the only reading of it on YT was a machine reading and I can’t stand those.

Was thinking a little bit about the difficulty of this series, and it definitely feels like a real step up from anything I’ve read so far, even more-so than technically harder stuff like 夜カフェ and Komi with the BBC. Komi is great (obviously I like it, i’ve read close to 400 of those chapters in english), but like someone mentioned earlier it doesn’t reeeeaaally have a plot. It’s mostly just jokes, and so it’s kinda OK if you miss things here and there. 夜カフェ and magic treehouse are both definitively children’s books, the stakes aren’t there and they don’t really expect you to be doing any reading below a very direct surface level. But Your Lie in April definitely feels like it expects things from you as a reader that nothing else I’ve read so far does. It’s refreshing! Definitely giving me some more confidence to tackle more plot-driven series going forward.

I did stumble across a site that had uploaded Soseki Natsume works in Japanese, I’d love to find that again but with my N4 powers I’m not sure if that’s biting off more than I can chew.

I’ll check out the book clubs on here though, thanks for the suggestion!

April 10th!

Today I read Chapter 15 and 16 of Komi Can’t Communicate.
Its a fun read, but I’m still not 100% sure if I’ll carry on past the first volume, I find it hard to quit once I’ve committed to a series by reading more than one volume, so while I’m enjoying it, I’m not sure I want to get sucked into a series which is already 28 volumes long and still releasing right now.
