Seasons was about 茅(ち)の輪(わ), which you might see at shrines. It seems you’re supposed to walk through them in the middle and at the end of the year. Seasons also talked about 水無月(みなづき), which are these 和菓子(わがし). I think you’re supposed to eat them to ward off things like disaster and disease.

Work ended up lasting until pretty late at night. I only had a bit of time to read a chapter of JoJo and do a little Ukkari. I have social plans tonight, but I’m hoping if I don’t drink too much that I might be able to finish off Nausicaa.

I’m pretty on top of chores so at least I should be able to read on Saturday…

恐るるに足りない (おそるるにたりない) [expression, い-adj.] not worth fearing

Another month is over! I haven’t updated for ages, but here are my stats for June:

In June I read less than any other month in 2023 so far. A total of 643 pages, with an average of 21 pages per day.

I missed a whole seven days of reading . I did manage to finish two books though, and my bookmeter claims that I’ve read 10001 pages since I started reading in Japanese. Nice number

On to July!

Edit: I just realized the end of June means we’re exactly halfway through the year (already? )
So here’s a quick 6-month recap: So far in 2023 I’ve read 5417 pages, and finished 19 books. Already way more than I read the whole of last year. Yay!

Murder at Pemberley by PD James : 20ish% → 100%

I’ve spent the last few days here in June finishing the novel I was reading in English. If you have read and liked Pride and Prejudice and like murder mysteries, then this sequel by PD James might be something you enjoy. I certainly did.

There was less Elizabeth in the middle of the book than I would have liked, but it was fun to get to spend some time with Darcy. I look forward to watching a movie adaption later which I’ve seen exists.

This book was also the first novel I’ve read in paper for the past decade and change. It brought some nostalgia in that. But also remembrance of the inconvenience of needing a good reading light.

The spring challenge overall hasn’t been very successful. Starts and spluttering to stops all the time. But I guess I have kept coming back with more consistency than I might have otherwise.

But it gave me an idea for how I hope to continue on in the next challenge. So see you all there!

Big Ole Spring Challenge Wrap-Up:

I read every single day! So that part was a success. At the start of this challenge, I didn’t really have many goals other than finishing all of ylia in april, which I did! But after that, I was kinda in a looser reading state that meant I didn’t quite do as much for may. I got kinda stuck on that miku manga not wanting to read a ton of it per day, plus working more on the test practice stuff. Then in June, my pace picked up quite a bit as I started to dive into more of the bookwalker freebies (that thread is great, you should follow it if you don’t) and started reading a lot more for variety instead of feeling like I had to finish whatever series I was reading at the time.

Overall, I read 23 volumes of manga, plus some random loose change chapters of a bunch of different stuff that probably adds up to another 2-3 volumes at least. My book book reading was pretty low, but I think between starting the IBC and IBC primer clubs I will get a fair bit of that in the next challenge, so I’m not too worried. I also have added a few easier novels to my plan to read list, but I might not get around to those until the fall challenge.

I also only track when I finish books, and there were quite a few volumes that I did some reading for in May that didn’t get finished until June. Looking at these graphs though, that slump in may and early june is definitely my biggest almost-break from reading practice I’ve done since starting But, even when I was not feeling the greatest about reading I did manage to hang on and read at least something every day. Even if that something was only a few pages of 4コマ and some test practice.

This month I think I only actually finished one manga, but thats partly because I’ve been reading 2 light novels alongside my manga reading, and I don’t have much stamina for reading novels yet, so its slowed me down a bit. I’m glad that I’m pushing myself to read stuff thats out of my comfort zone!

• 60 pages of ステージ・オブ・ザ・グラウンド, finishing the book! It was good, I enjoyed it. I don’t remember when I first started this one (apparently sometime in the Autumn '22 challenge), but man it’s been a while lol. I’m glad the writing didn’t take too too long to get used to once I actually got going and I was able to finish it in time to end the month.

Some vocab of note:

In June, I read 30/30 days and read (finished) 16 volumes of manga (3 of those were ~50-pg mini manga though, and not on Bookmeter and so not included in the stats above) and 5 novels—4 of those read entirely within this month! The first was started last month. According to Bookmeter, I read an average of 110 pages/day. I actually thought that was low for me since I usually read a bunch of manga (way less novel-wise, though), but I actually read more than last month.

This challenge, I actually did pretty well with reading novels. I actually managed to cross off two out of the four non-book-club novels I’d already had started going into the challenge! (Last challenge, it was only one out of four.) I also started and finished 6 within the span of these three months (7, if you count Stage of the Ground which I actually restarted).

I actually did a lot better on that front than I expected, and beat my record for fastest time reading a novel in Japanese three separate times (currently, it’s 4 days). I discovered that both my reading speed and my stamina for reading novels has increased by a lot (I read a whole 126 pages of 花馨る雨の名を in a single day! Double my previous record, though it’s definitely an outlier at this point and I haven’t come close to it since) and if the writing style isn’t difficult for me, I can finish in about a week or less—time and energy (and interest) permitting, of course. I still have a ways to go with learning vocab and especially grammar, but it’s still nice getting to see this progress. And nice to finally be making a dent in all my unread novels! (Of course, if I keep buying more…)

Lunch yesterday did me in and I ended up changing my social plans from nice long dinner to hanging out with my friend at my place. Between tiredness from being sick and doing probably 80% of the convo in Japanese, I was beat. I barely finished my Renshuu stuff and I lost track of how many times I fell asleep during JoJo…

Seasons was about the namesake of July 文月(ふみづき) which comes from ふくらむ, which refers to the rice reaching a certain growing point. 7/1 was about how the mountains, sea, and rivers open for everyone- that is that rivers and sea aren’t considered too cold now and Mt Fuji (at least one of the trails) officially opens today.

Hopefully I’ll be able to get way more reading in for the summer challenge and I’ll update my stats probably today or next week.

Long time no update however, I have been keeping track of things aside from here… gotta say, May and June were not the best months in terms of reading Japanese, if anything, I had to focus more on Chinese what with the HSK that was coming up in June—it went very well, I think… daily reading in English is something that’s been established for a while now, so at least that’s something

I have another week of juggling two jobs, but after that I should only have my summer job which is totally chill this year and I’ll have plenty of time for reading with y’all can’t wait!

I keep my own custom spreadsheet where I log everything per day, month and year, then at the end of the month I just use the latest month’s data to make the charts. Just plain old Google Sheets.
