Read section 2, all of chapter 3 and half of 4 in 手紙! (and technically a couple pages of some random manga I found while waiting around.) Today I couldn’t really focus well, but was so encouraged by all my previous progress and made myself keep pushing forward. Hope my clear mind returns tomorrow!

My favorite new words:
  • 心地よい (ここちよい) = Comfortable, pleasant
  • 元も子もない (もともこもない) = losing everything, come to nothing
  • 尻馬に乗る (しりうまにのる) = to blindly follow someone, can also mean to advantage of someone (popularity, status, etxc.)
  • こりごり (懲り懲り) = Bitter experience, learning from a bad experience, being fed up

Morning reading: one and a half pages. Met the fairy prince who’s hair is shining dark red, eyes are dark crimson, skin is gold, and flower-clothes are ultramarine. After looking up a zillion color words I kind of lost focus. :joy:

words and mnemonics

Met wanikani words 中央 and 名人 in the wild for the first time!

I also made up a mnemonic (well, if you look at the kanji the mnemonic pretty much writes itself) for 茜色 (あかねいろ): sunset; dark red, crimson flowers in the West.

Ah this always nice! I had 針金 in mine this morning.

Also learnt 土手, which I could guess the reading for but absolutely not the meaning (it’s a river embankment), thanks for nothing kanji.

Nice! Also, it’s funny, your comment suddenly reminded me that 土手 was one of the first words I encountered when I started reading my first graded reader for first graders (say that ten times fast). It was only written in hiragana of course, no kanji. I like the kanji though! It’s like :thinking: the earth is holding the river and guiding it between it’s two hands.

Edit to add: but agreed, the kanji are absolutely not helpful in figuring out the meaning. :joy:

Main post

Sept 12 & 13 - I finished the first story of 10分で読めるお話 : " 月夜のでんしんばしら " from 宮沢賢治 (Miyazawa Kenji) who is apparently a famous novelist! As I said before, it was quite hard to read. I learned the word 柱 (pillar, it’s in the title as ばしら), which I heard again today while watching JoJo!!

Sept 14 - It was my second day at uni and I was so tired, I only read 3 pages of the manga 君は放課後インソムニア (insomniacs after school)

Sept 15 - I read another story from 10分で読めるお話 : " 魔術師とよばれた男 " from はやみねかおる (he’s also a famous novelist). It was easier to read and really nice, I’m planning on buying other novels from him!

Vocab

弛む（たるむ）to slacken; to loosen
不滅（ふめつ）immortal
図工（ずこう）drawing and manual arts (school subject)​
振興（しんこう）promotion; encouragement
洒落（しゃれ）joke
如何わしい（いかがわしい）suspicious
閃く（ひらめく）to flash into one’s mind (e.g. an idea) - first time seeing this kanji!!!
ニヤリ meaningfully (smiling, grinning, etc.)
賑わう（にぎわう）to be crowded with people
目出度し目出度し（めでたしめでたし）and they all lived happily ever after - why am I learning this only now? haha
咄嗟に（とっさに）at once; right away

This is great!
This will be my first attempt at reading,
but this seems like a good chance to
dig into the various media I’ve collected.
Going to start slow and try to read from a recipe book.

I love these readers! I have read grades 1 and 2 of the 名作 and 物語 series, but really want the お話 as well. Now after your comments I want them even more!

I found the お話 book at my local secondhand bookshop, I didn’t know about the other series before seeing someone’s post about it! Now I want them all :laughing: We could talk about the stories we really liked!

Welcome! Recipe books are so good for reading practice, because it’s a comparatively narrow set of words that you get lots of repetition/reinforcement. Good choice! And then you can cook from them and it’s even better!

Read the Yokai story for today’s date, no sound recording, but reading went pretty smoothly.

I just needed help with some of the kanji (which are on here, and I should have known them, but brain didn’t want to work).

What did I read:

  • 大海原と大海原, Pages 19-26

All I can say is that despite not knowing quite a few words, it’s a pleasant feeling to read a text and actually understand what you read. Even if it’s all with furigana which decreases difficulty to easy by default. Story wise, Wadanohara and her familiars returned to their homeland because of some “urgent magical task”, and chapter ends with a witch from withes country sensing they are back home, and saying that that sea is unfamiliar. Actually looking forward to what going to happen next. I didn’t play the game, so I’m out of the context, so I’m interested as to why Wada lost her memories and who’s the mysterious guy she’s trying to remember is.

Words I didn’t know: 急用, 故郷, 舵, 心地, 聴こえる, 風船, 割る, いじめる, いい加減, 着く, 慣れる

You’ll wake up tomorrow fluent in Japanese! I’ve had both power-ups now, but I think the second one reversed everything because my head’s all jumbled with kanji again.
