Question about wrong answers and review

Hi. If i get one part of a word wrong and one part right (for example, I get the meaning right but the reading wrong), will i need to review all parts of the card again soon? Or just the part I got wrong? Are they considered independent in the review system?

I ask because sometimes when I get a card wrong, I look up the right answer and when I do so I also see the correct answer for the other component, and then mark it correct a few cards later when otherwise I might not have remembered it had I not just seen it a minute earlier when checking the correct answer for the other part. If they are considered independent in the review system, it might not be a good idea to do that.

Thanks!

The item (card) contents are a single item. You need to get both meaning and reading correct to advance the item. If you get reading or meaning or both wrong the item will drop down to a lower level. Note: radical items are meaning only.

That’s great, and as it should be. Thanks a lot.

Where are you looking it up? If you use the “Item info” functionality available during the review (either via mouse click or “F” hot-key) only the section which is related to the current question being asked will be displayed. So if you got meaning wrong and open the item info, the reading section (and all other sections) will be collapsed and not visible

Granted, often times the explanation within the reading section may give away the meaning. It would be nice if only the reading was shown and the explanation subsection was also collapsed. For this reason, when I get a reading wrong, I do not use the “F” hot-key to open the item info but instead use the “J” hot-key to play the audio. That way I get a reminder of the reading without any chance of accidentally seeing the meaning.

I open the collapsed section. Which for me is a good idea, I do want to review both sides immediately when I get one part wrong. As long as its treated as one card as the other poster said, then I dont really see the downside
? As anyway you’ll have to review both parts again within a day, right?

That was the other me :slight_smile:

That is not correct.

Getting an item wrong does not mean that the item will come up for review within/the next day.

When you get an item wrong it drops to a lower SRS level. When it will next come up for review depends on the new SRS level it is now at. For example, if the new SRS stage is Master, it will come up again in 1 month. If the new SRS stage is Guru2, it will come up again in 2 weeks.

How many SRS levels an item drops will depend on the total number of times you have gotten the item wrong. The more times/more frequently you have missed it, the further the drop.

new_srs_stage = current_srs_stage - (incorrect_adjustment_count * srs_penalty_factor)

incorrect_adjustment_count is the number of incorrect times you have answered divided by two and rounded up. srs_penalty_factor is 2 if the current_srs_stage is at or above 5. Otherwise it is 1.

Ah I see, thanks. In any case, theres no huge downside to opening the collapsed section to read the rest of the info once youve gotten part of the card wrong, right? As it sounds like wanikani sees it all as one card. Because if you know it, you know it. If you dont know it, then youll get the card wrong and cycle through it again in the same session, but then the delay to reviewing it again will be unchanged if youve already gotten the other part of the card wrong.
