Hi! I am sort of confuses when using ‘は’, don’t know when to pronounce it as o or ha. any tips?
Do you mean ha and wa?
Ha is on any word, and wa is when used as a particle.
はちこ hachiko
わたしは watashi wa
no Im very very sure I have seen it used as o or wo but pronounced o
You’re talking about を?
haha no im talking about は pronounced as o. I shouldve brought an example, ill go look and come back!
は and お because the right part is similar?
しお?
は can replace some particles, so it can go where you would expect an を to go (like in お酒は飲まない). But you would still say it as “wa”.
Unless there is some kind of bizarre exception I’ve never heard of.
Are you confusing は and ほ, perhaps?
im probably just tweaking…
I don’t know if these videos will help or not, so sorry for the spam:
My guess is the confusion might stem from differences in mouth opening, tongue position, or lip rounding. So checking out the あ vowel pronunciation might be useful:
In case you’re referring to the は in こんにちは or こんばんは, which employs the reading わ:
Here’s a video that goes into detail about why it’s こんにちは, not こんにちわ, and other words that are not read as they are written.
Interestingly, one commenter in the わ pronunciation video also heard it as を (probably having the same problem as you did). So here’s an お pronunciation video so you could compare, which is the same pronunciation for を.
