Hey guys. It seems that there is still no Dark Mode option available on WaniKani. As someone who has sensitive eyesight, it would be nice to see them add this feature soon. Please interact with is post to grab gain support and grab the developer’s attention.
WE WANT DARK MODE!
While you wait for the implementation of a Dark Mode for the WK Dashboard (the forums already have Dark mode natively), you might wanna try Dark Reader (exists for multiple browsers).
As if forces any website into Dark Mode. You can easily toggle Dark mode on and off as well.
Me sitting here using light mode for almost everything
dark mode reviews would look pretty cool though
same. I just like it better. ^^’
Personally, I use light mode for everything, and simply turn down the brightness. Saves battery power if you’re on mobile, and improves the life of your screen’s backlight (mobile or desktop).
But I have nothing against dark mode.
I know those who like Dark Mode have clamored for it for a while, but I don’t know if it’s on the radar for the WK team. Your best bet, besides this thread, is to email hello@wanikani.com
YES! Dark mode will be so cool!!

We can get tips for how to pressure them into prioritizing dark mode here:
There’s also the Breeze Dark theme which is better supported by userscripts
My guess is that the WaniKani team first wants to convert all pages to Tailwind CSS and maybe afterwards use its dark mode support to offer a dark mode for WaniKani. Considering that they started with Tailwind CSS at the end of last year and until now only finished parts of the lesson page, this might take a while.
Wanikani already has dark mode through userstyles.
Dark mode always reminds me of 1990s amateur GeoCities web sites.
I want dark mode too. Have everything in it.
Flaming Durtles the WaniKani android app has dark mode. That’s what I use.
I get so sleepy when doing reviews, it’s like counting sheep for me. So personally, incinerating my retinas is actually welcome. But as others have mentioned, there’s plugins that exist already to make this happen.
If you use opera gx as your browser you can force dark and it looks pretty good with this website. I definitely recommend it because I focus so much better when studying with that dark page. But they 100% need to integrate that feature.
I’m pretty sure there are chrome extensions you can get that make light pages dark as well, I can’t vouch for their quality tho.
@Wanikani Feel free to implement this theme into Wanikani. the code is messy though as I am not coder.
Welcome back to the forums! The account you tagged has been inactive for 10 years
Imo GX’s dark mode looks hot garbo on WK, like it does on most sites:
Text also becomes harder to read in some places:
Ouch… the extension Dark Reader’s actually looks pretty decent
