New Unlocks in the last 30 days

Does anyone know what triggers an item to appear in this list? By the title alone I was thinking it might mean any new items that I had seen for the first time via a lesson in the last 30 days but that doesn’t appear to be the case. It also doesn’t appear to be items that recently made it to a new level; apprentice, guru, etc.

As background, I spent the first 18+ months on WaniKani going as fast as I could. In retrospect that was a mistake as I missed a lot of master/enlightened items when they popped back up and my apprentice queue grew to an overwhelming number. Because of that I haven’t done any new lessons in over six months, only review, review, review.

So, I don’t understand why I have any new unlocks in the last 30 days. What would trigger that? Case in point, I have two kanjis in my “new unlocks in the last 30 days queue” both dated July 10th. (Today is July 13th). I don’t remember the kanji (story of my life) but I definitely didn’t review them recently and my review queue is finally back down to zero. I’m confidently I reviewed them in the past (since they’re from prior levels) but definitely not recently.

Bottom line, anyone know what triggers an item to appear in that queue?

If you’re talking about 絹, it was added to level 37 recently.

Ok, so first: you can’t do every lesson right now. You have to reach the level they’re on but also get the radicals (and kanji, for vocabulary words) they’re based on to guru before it will put them in your lesson list. That’s referred to as being “locked”, when you can’t do them yet.

“Unlocks” are items you’ve newly guru’d the pre-requisites for. You can now do those lessons.

Sometimes that happens much later when they move something down to a level below you. If you’ve already done the radicals it takes to “unlock” the kanji or the kanji it takes to unlock the vocabulary word, you can then immediately do the lesson. So it shows up in new unlocks even though you would have done it long ago had it been there when you went through that level.

That might be what’s going on. I noticed that two kanji appeared on the “new unlocks” list in spite of not doing any new lessons. One was the one you mentioned, 絹,and the other was 漬. I’m going to assume they were recently added kanji. I thought I had forgotten them but if they’re new that would also explain the behavior. Thank you for the help.

That makes sense. So if something appears in the unlock list in spite of not doing any new lessons they would mean I got one of the prerequisites (radicals for new kanji?) up to the guru state. Thank you.
