New online Japanese test

Hi insu, yeah, feel free to start your exam whenever you feel ready. There is no hard rule but I can’t promise the site will be live in 2043

Sorry for the problem :frowning: I think there was some intermittent/rare issue close to the server infrastructure. Please try again.

I see folks using the discount code and this is great, I encourage you to post feedback and/or exam results!

I think I will deactivate the discount code on Friday.

By Friday, do you mean tomorrow or next week? I know some folks who wanted to try it but haven’t found the time yet.

And a question: I was wondering about retesting value. If someone decides to retake the test down the line, will the questions (and texts, audio tracks, etc) be likely to be the same? Or is there a large pool of questions and the likelihood of getting the same questions per level is relatively small?

Here are my results, by the way:

I probably could have scored higher in section 2 but I must admit I found the subject matter of some of the texts a little too boring to bother. Such is the nature of tests. Still, it’s probably a fair assessment - if my level was higher, I could still easily skim the text whether it was interesting to me or not.

Thanks for the code! I just completed the test and got 56%/N3, which I’d like to think is a fairly accurate reflection of my abilities since I’m hoping to take N3 in December. The test all went pretty smoothly for me, so no real feedback to give. I do think with these level-finding tests I tend not to try as hard as I might on a regular test because I don’t know whether or not I’m “supposed” to know something, if that makes sense, so I sometimes end up kind of throwing. It’s not really a problem with the test so much as a problem with me though.

I meant tomorrow  If you know someone who would like to take the test but can’t afford it, I’d happily provide a discount or free exam access. Just let me know. Or they can use current discount code and take the exam later. It would be fantastic for the service to generate even a small revenue that may partially balance my past expenses (creating questions, audio recordings, not to mention my time). But I also enjoy seeing people use it even if it’s for free!

As for retesting value I would say it makes sense to wait at least 3-6 months before a retake. I think after such period of time you might even forget questions and don’t mind if some of them repeat. If you retake a test now then some of the questions would be the same. If the site keeps attracting new users I will definitely consider investing more time (and money) to create more questions.

Glad to hear you believe it’s a fair assessment of your abilities. And congrats on great results!

Just tried again and it worked, thanks so much!

Not a big deal, but I’m not getting any emails. Tried with 2 accounts and nothing.

I’m assuming you checked you spam folder?

Correct.

Never mind, they just loaded.

When I signed up, I also didn’t receive the email confirmation code after waiting about 30 minutes, then I reloaded the page and entered it again, and it came twice.

It will.

There will be a rush of customers checking this out in the years to come.

Trust. Watch.

Well, I managed to get just shy of N1 for both the kanji/vocab and the grammar/reading sections, but barely scraped into N5 for listening (though I’ve never been great at listening), so I scored mid-N3 overall. Oof.

My feedback: I feel that some of the questions in the kanji/vocab section should explain more clearly what the question is asking. I had to work it out for myself, and sometimes it’s not immediately apparent. Some of the listening questions too, perhaps - I was completely caught by surprise when it abruptly switched from “listen to this conversation and answer the question” to “what would you say in this situation?”

I’ll be closing free trail in few hours. I think I will try to prepare a summary of how many people visited, applied the code, took the exam. It would also be interesting to see the distribution of results.

I am having the same issue. Maybe the server is just having issues again so I will try again later. Hopefully before it closes lol

Thanks for the test. I enjoyed taking it. Kanji N1, Grammar N3 and Listening N5. I think it is a quite accurate representation of my language abilities. In my opinion I would have classified 2 out of the 4 kanji/vocab mistakes i made under grammer. I could have probably gotten N4 listening if the type of questions where grouped together so I didnt have to wonder what I should be focussing on/remembering.

Anyway, my listening comprehension is kind of embarrassing but as expected. Does anyone have any tips to improve it?

Okay, I deactivated the discount code  As I said, if it’s too pricey I will happily provide a partial discount or free access. You can contact me by sending an email to contact@shiken24.com.

Some users in certain situations (after logging in again) might have had a problem with retrieving past exams. I’m sorry. I fixed this issue, it should be all good now.

@omk3 and @Till
I fixed the usability issue of reading comprehension view with multiple questions. Now there might be two independent scrolls: one for a text, the other one for questions. Thank you for pointing this out!

I watch every day one hour japanese tv and I never have any problems with the listening part in JLPT mock tests.

Yesterday I wanted to do this test but didn’t have time. Today I finally have time but the free trial is over. Well I still have more than enough mock tests and the past years JLPT tests I can try.

To anyone interested, I provide stats for the trial period (i.e. signed up within April 12-19), including distribution of results.

Number of ppl who signed up for a exam: 116
Number of ppl who completed an exam: 37 (excluding 2 users who quickly stormed through exam)

Average scores:
total score: 49
kanji&vocab: 70 (no surprise the average is high for wanikani users)
gramma&reading: 44
listening: 31 (I think you need the focus and motivation to do well here)

And this is the distribution of scores for total and each section.
vertical axis - count of exam falling into given bucket
horizontal axis - number of points, e.g. “50” means “45-50” range

The exam remains open, I encourage you to consider taking it for self-evaluation or JLPT preparation.

To anyone who liked shiken24 (shiken24.com), I kindly ask you to refer others to the website :bowing_man: I’m afraid I’m better at building stuff than promoting it.
