I dont know exactly when. I’ve read graded reader books from the beginnning, and they accompanied me all along the levels. I am still reading now some ~N3 graded readers (rather easily), and more painfully some slightly more advanced “native” readings. On the kanji side (that’s what WK is about after all), around ~L30 I saw a noticeable difference, yet, felt the need to continue, because too much unknown kanji per page were encoutered.

Hmmmm… Several aspects.

First, there was a mental barrier inherited from level 8. I tried to speed up L8 (as can be seen in my chart ! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:), but right after, I paid that during several levels, felts overwhelmed. But it took me long time before understanding it was because I wasnt super organized. I did L8 like a dumb ass, doing almost all the kanji/lessons in 24h… traumatized.

At that time (from L1 to ~L20) I was doing my reviews on big chunks, like once or twice a day… I totally changed my habits after that, doing my reviews almost on a hourly basis.

I understood that I am more of a small step, small chunks guy. From L20, except for the morning batch (more on that below), during the day, I was (and still am), doing reviews whenever/wherever I can:

  • Toilets ? Do 5/10 or 15 reviews
  • Waiting in line ? same
  • Between two pro meetings ? do 5 reviews
  • etc.

I also conditionned the situation of reviews, exemple:

  • Embark in my car ? Do 5 reviews before starting the engine
  • Now parked ? Do 5 reviews before getting out of the car
  • Finished my job at the office ? Do 5 reviews before leaving
  • etc.

And of course, you can deduce that I was doing most of (actually 100%) of my reviews on my cellphone (thanks Tsurukame !!)

So my goal was to create tons of reviewing (+ lessons) habits. I suggest to read a good book about that called “Atomic Habits”

Another change between before/after L20 was systematically doing Vocab lessons as soon as possible when they unlocked (before starting any new kanji, except at the very beginning of a new level, where i did a little bit of both at the same time). Small chunks here also, 3 lessons here and there along the day. Because they reinforce kanjis, and you have to do it anyway, so the sooner the better to not have Kanjis back in Apprentice.

And oh yeah, my unitary chunk for reviews was 5, but for lessons, it was 3.

For morning batches (usually around 100/150 reviews waiting), I created a habit of waking up around 1 hour before kids and family routine doing them at calm.

Even this big batch, I used to cut it in multiple streaks (during this 1 hour time frame). Doing first 50% (+5), then, 50% of the rest (+5), etc. Always leaving slightly less of halway at each streak. It was more digestive for my mind and motivation.

In brief, I understood that I am (or became) a “small steps” guy… but that small steps, for me, can lead to long marathon.

Last 2 lessons learned:

  • when unlocking a new level, always do first the vocabs from the previous level before starting new stuff.
  • It is ok some reviews pile while you sleep (dont sacrifice your well deserved sleepness) but never go to sleep with some waiting reviews… Have a clean score card at the end of the day.
