Haha oops. But unlike in GTO, this lady could be not underage. But yeah probably a lot of クンクン in GTO, didn’t think about trying to look there, let me check the free preview.
HELLO, NANA-READING WORLD! I am finally here to catch up and boy do I have thoughts and FEELINGS!
Chapter 15
-
I love everyone being together playing mah-jong! The author does scenes with large groups so well – you can really feel the dynamics and everyone’s unique personalities. (And all the hilarious little asides! This manga is helping my eyes adapt to reading size 2 scratchy handwriting!)
-
The reveal of Yasu and Reira’s past relationship! (Wait are we calling her Leila or Reira, I know we learn she was named after the song Layla but I remember reading the English version with her being called Reira and now I’m wondering why the translator made that choice…). Anyway this is really one of the first pieces of “lore” we get about Yasu! And it’s wild that no one else seems to know.
-
Nobu and Hachi’s walk! Is this the first time we’ve seen them alone together? I know I commented on a previous chapter how they are so similar in may ways, and that’s really emphasized in this scene, with Nobu talking about his imaginary girlfriends. All the scenes where anyone is walking along the river are so inherently romantic…I wonder how long of a walk it is to the conbini for them?
-
The expressions!!!
-
New word unlocked that I feel like is going to come up again: スケコマシ
-
Speaking of Takumi, does anyone actually like him? It’s so interesting that the author has said she was always Team Takumi as opposed to Team Nobu, but she so clearly writes him as a, well, スケコマシ. Actually now that I think about it, he is somewhat similar to George, the main male love interest in Paradise Kiss – suave and self-centered.
-
So wholesome that Yasu calls to check in! Lol that he’s wearing sunglasses in his cubicle. I still MUST KNOW more about his law firm!!
-
I had a little bit of trouble with Nana’s line on p. 135:
おせーなハチ公のやつ
先食うか
I managed to figure out that she’s basically saying “Hachi’s taking forever so let’s go ahead and eat.” But getting 遅い out of おせーな required DeepL I am ashamed to admit
. Also 先 being used in this context was a bit new to me, too.
Chapter 16
-
It’s interesting how Hachi feels that things with Takumi are so immediately wrong. Like, it almost surprised me a bit how she doesn’t feel like she is being swept off her feet being kissed in his car and then taken to his hotel. Like she really fixates on how this isn’t the fantasy she had dreamed of…is that mostly because of Nana’s influence? Because decided she was ready fora stable boyfriend and Takumi so clearly isn’t that and she’s falling into another secret romance like with Asano?
-
Okay, I laughed:
-
Hachi’s phone call with Nana is painful
And Hachi keeps telling herself it’s okay because it’s just going to be a one time thing but that means we all know it’s not…! -
I love how Naoki’s character just exists to be really freaking irritating ahahha.
-
I had some trouble reading Ren’s text to Nana on page 181…But I think it was cute from what I understand!
Loved reading your thoughts ![]()
replies chapter 15
I had written Leila myself in a comment, but there’s a place in the manga (the JP version that we’re reading) where it’s written Reira in English (well in non Japanase), so should be Reira
Hachi? ![]()
Oh I never knew that, interesting. To me, she is the one really writing him in a way that’s it’s very hard to like him ![]()
Ooh I don’t remember George being THAT bad. But true, similar personalities. Will have to reread at some point!
Oops, I was just saying recently in another thread that the slang in NANA is not that bad ![]()
replies chapter 16
Hm, I don’t see it as Nana’s influence, I think I would have thought the same thing of a good looking rock star. “He’s probably getting with all the girls he wants and I’m just one more”. I don’t think she can consider him as boyfriend-material, first because she doesn’t know anything about his personality and they don’t know each other at all, she just met him as his fan girl, and second because of his job / life style.
So she just goes for the “sure I’ll have a one night stand with a super star”, but in the end still hopes for a romance, being Hachi and all.

this one? she’s about to go on stage, so he tells her to enjoy the climax.
存分に絶頂感を味わいたまえ。
味わう is to savor
I think たまえ is this grammar point, don’t remember seeing it before actually!
But apparently I did, here in Shadow House for example:
and finally Ren signs “from the genius guitarist”, referring to his confession to her earlier, that people call him a genius but he actually just practiced a lot
矢沢あい book club’s next read? ![]()
It is!
Although
Despite this, たまえ is a structure that is only used to someone of lower status than the speaker, and primarily only by men. This ‘lower status relationship’ is usually one that is obvious between both the speaker and the listener, such as a boss and subordinate.
I’ve definitely heard it between (usually) men and their friends (where everyone is calling themselves 俺 and each other お前), so I wouldn’t say it requires a lower status relationship, per se.
Hehe that’s a great idea ![]()
Can anyone tell me what the kanji here is?
I really can’t decipher the second character, but my guess is 予備軍 which - if you use the second (informal) meaning according to wiktionary - kind of makes sense…
備軍 • (yobigun) ←**よびぐん** (yobigun)?
ニート予備軍
3.nīto yobigun*
4.future* NEET
認知症の**予備軍**
5.ninchishō no yobigun*
6.precursor* to dementia
If you give me the page I can look in my physical copy.
I do think it’s 予備軍 though.
JMdict has slightly different definitons:
- reserves (esp. troops)
- reserve army
- potential members of some group (e.g. the elderly)
- people at risk (e.g. of a medical condition)
- wannabees
I think it’s 112
p.112
The French translation seems to agree with what you two have found. Hachi says:
- Ah bon ? Mais si Blast passe professionnel, tu seras une star toi aussi. vous êtes une armée de réserve
The English translation isn’t much help here: “So what? I’m sure if Blast went major label, you’d be a rock star too. You’ll see.” with the “You’ll see.” small in the balloon at the bottom.
