Currently reading the light novel for Seishun Buta Yarou that I bought in Japan. I came across this sentence:
当然、昼下がりの図書館の中で、彼女の存在は浮きまくっていた
Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t understand that last verb at all. Obviously it comes from 浮く, and in this context probably means something like “her existence felt out of place”. But I want to make sure I fully understand this sentence.
まくる is an auxiliary verb that intensifies the verb it attaches to or implies repeated action (though repeating is probably not relevant here). It often gets translated as “[do something] like crazy.”
存在が浮く means something like “to feel out of place” so 存在が浮きまくる means the same thing but more intense, like “to feel ridiculously out of place” or something.
