Marumori’s grammar articles are imho much more straightforward and to the point than bunpro’s.
On the other hand, 350 is a wild price point to get just a textbook. You’d have to be interested in their whole offering to sub.
I only did a BP free trial so I could be wrong, but I don’t think BP has unscramble grammar SRS. Both platforms have the fill in the blank option, but I think only MM has unscramble.
And I happen to quite like it since it has fake tokens for things people are likely to get confused and sometimes it does get me! And it’s good for practicing unscrambling, especially if planning to take the JLPT.
I like marumoris Konjugation practise. But I have to try bunpros Kaijugation Game again to See if I like it too.
I like marumoris Grammar explanations. Bunpros explanations are ok, but I always confuse similar grammarpoints with each other. I haven’t tested marumoris SRS system yet, but I was hoping for a better explanation how these very similar Grammarpoints are different from each other and better hints what answer they want. At the moment I’m making an Excel Sheet of all Bunpro grammarpoints to try to find all these little nuances.
The example Sentences of the vocab flashcards are Sometimes weird. English is Not my native language, but when the example Sentence says “my Heart hurts” I would expect that they ask for the Word kokoro and not for the word むね (chest). I have the Same Problem with the Grammar flashcards. They give you the english Translation of the vocab or the grammarpoint, but then they use different words in the english example Sentences. I make a lot of mistakes because of that.
I will not abandon Bunpro, but I’m hoping for something that explains things that I don’t get with Bunpro. I also bought Tobira Beginning Japanese 1&2 and Tobira Intermediate Japanese 1 because I had problems with the exercises Genki 2 (too much pairwork / groupwork), but I haven’t started it yet, because I’m too exhausted after work to sit at a desk and Work with a physical Textbook. It’s easier to Just use an App.
I would also like more repetition of grammarpoints, but a greater variety of examples / exercises.
I use Tobira Beginning Japanese as my main text, however I rarely look at the book. I usually just watch the accompanying videos on their website as I really like them
Ah well then I hope you like MM. The reason why I didn’t pursue BP beyond the trial is because I found the hints infuriating, and the MM ones were less so (before I switched to Unscramble only in my settings).
There are various lessons where, if there was a previously introduced grammar point, they’ll mention it and do comparisons. Some of them even have charts. So hopefully you enjoy them as much as I do!
If you have any questions, the discord community for it is very active.
Do you know which lesson has one of these comparisons? Then I could unlock them and See if they are understandable. Or do I Just need to search for one of the many must do and seems/looks like grammarpoints? Are These comparisons also Part of the explanations in the Grammar dictionary or are they only Part of the adventure Grammar explanations?
I don’t have discord and don’t know how to use it. What exactly is discord?
Edit: Do you means This Kind of lesson? I won’t have access to These Lessons anymore when the Trial ends, right?
I have both subscriptions and for taking new lessons or review, I like bunprosrs. Grammar explanation for both are basically similar. In the end, in my case, if I use the grammar points in my own example sentences or in my conversation with my sensei, I would understand it and memorize it much better. And I need to keep using them, consciously for now, until I really can pull them out of magic hat without difficulty.
My current sources of grammar: bunprosrs, the three dictionaries of Japanese Grammar, Minna No Nihongo book.
I Hope there will be a Sale around easter. I Wish I Had known about marumori a few weeks ago during the Last Sale. The Grammar SRS of Bunpro got so difficult that I just changed to translate reveal. Instead of fill in reveal.
I am with you on frustration over Bunpro’s SRS system. The nuances between grammar points and between similar vocabulary are so subtle and it’s often very hard to determine what they are actually asking for. The lessons and grammar explanations aren’t as helpful as they could be since there is very little side by side comparison between similar points and words and everything is written in a very technical, academic style.
The other thing I don’t like about Bunpro is I NEED mnemonics for vocabulary and there are none provided - I have to spend a lot of time and energy coming up with my own and it is exhausting. I’ve gotten to the point where I dread doing my lessons and reviews for the day, whereas I still enjoy and look forward to using Wanikani.
I’ve used Marumori a little bit and much preferred their grammar lessons since they aren’t as dry and academic - the language and terminology is more approachable - and they do more to compare and contrast similar points. I also like that they provide mnemonics as well as access to community generated alternatives.
I kind of bounced off Marumori quickly though, because I tried to go too fast (which was my fault, but also the way the lessons are written kind of encourages it), got in over my head and became frustrated with my lack of recall. I plan to go back and restart Marumori at a slower, more reasonable pace.
I also went too fast with Bunpro. I’ve bought the marumori lifetime abo during the last Sale and am now reading slowly the Grammar Lessons of the adventure but I haven’t started with the srs yet. I will start with the srs when I reach a grammarpoint that I don’t know yet. And I will suspend everything that I don’t want/need to learn.
I also like marumoris Lessons better than bunpros.
At the moment I use marumori only for Grammar. But I will also try learning Kanji with it when I want to get away from furigana. I’m reading Japanese Graded Readers lvl 1 and so far the Kanji still have furigana.
