Managing increasing workload

Hello fellow WaniKani members!

I have joined around 300 days ago and I am proud that I am on my way to level 24 this week. However, I have noticed that my workload has become a bit too much since the old reviews came around. Currently I am doing 3 hours every day and around 300 - 400 reviews. Here is my current item spread:

I have already tried to manage the workload by reducing the new lessons from 20 to 15 but sadly that did not help very much. I have read that apprentice items to 100 is a very good idea, but I actually enjoyed progressing and learning new kanji. I also noticed that my accuracy sits around 80 % and I am unsure what the best course of action is to improve accuracy.

I hope that you can share a advice how to procede. Especially if you were in the same situation before. Thanks in advance!

The only way to reduce workload is to reduce the lesson count. If going down to 15 is not good enough reduce it to 10.

One way of reducing the lesson count is to control the apprentice count. If the number of apprentices is high you stop doing lessons until the apprentice count is low again. The number is not set in stone. If keeping it at 100 doesn’t appeal to you may set your target at 120 or 150. You may experiment with various numbers to find which one works best for you.

If you reduce the lesson count your accuracy should improve.

If like me, you had prior Kanji knowledge but not that extensive or deep, up to about levels 10 or 15 were relatively easy. It definitely got more difficult for me and then there are leeches
That’s why I’m slowing down and doing more reading in Japanese.

I recommend to slow down a lot: ~2 Kanji + 3 vocab new lessons per day with as many of your reviews as possible, until you feel it’s under control. You won’t win a race that way but you likely can avoid burnout.

At 276 items in apprentice and multiple hours per day of reviews, my suggestion would be to just pause lessons for 2 weeks, clear some of your apprentice items, and then resume lessons at a lower rate afterwards. 80% accuracy is on the lower side but if you have 300 items you’re still learning all at once, it’s not surprising. Apprentice items generate the most reviews, and the more newish items competing for space in your memory, the harder each will be.

+1 to what Araigoshi said:

“Good” numbers are less than

about 100 apprentice

about 500 guru

and if possible, over 85% accuracy

Sorry for the late reply and thanks for your insights. As you suggested I have not learned any new words for the past days to catch up with the reviews. I think I went a litte to fast and as I did not have any time to immerse because of the workload, it become quite exhausting.
