Thank you. Yeah I managed to read one whole page of Kiki’s Delivery Service with minimal lookups so that was immensely motivating. I think it was just the full moon messing with me.

Since we mentioned the Halloween club (which will be many, many months from now), and since I’m in the mood for book videos apparently, I thought I’d seek horror recommendations today. Interestingly, 予言の島 turned up once again, but so did 夜市, which I found not really scary at all (although the setting was cool). Also interestingly, almost none of the covers look like they might be for scary/horror books.
Since I started listening to podcasts I’ve discovered that even small amounts of traffic is surprisingly noisy – a volume level that’s totally fine normally is just drowned out by a passing car. I’ve settled on a daily walking route that carefully threads through parks and back streets so that it only meets busier roads a couple of times and then just to cross over. During the COVID lockdowns was great for walking and cycling because almost no cars…
Personally, when I just started listening I couldn’t follow Yuyu’s podcast very well without subtitles so in the beginning, I always watched it when I could read along with the subtitles as well so that the input is more comprehensible.
It also very rewarding that I can now put it now while cooking or walking and follow along with what he is talking about.
It just takes time, so keep at it, even if it’s just little every day

First half of of 緊急取調室 EP.5. (Last time I barely got into first 5 min.) Every officer are playing a console game now. Also, whacky English spelling for PlayStation.
I paused at almost every line by hovering on subtitle line + Language Reactor. I didn’t rewind much, nor extensively looked up, but just used LR’s dictionary, or simply spent enough time on a line. In contrast, normally clicking the screen to pause sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t.
So-matome N3 Listening Ch.2 [1/6]. Each chapter now has 6 days (sections / pairs of pages) now. かける continues to trip me up.
君の膵臓をたべたい Ch.4 [2/5]. I now highlight on Bookwalker (LN) by audio tracks.
Day 9, 9th of January
Once more back to Teppei, today I listened to episode #8 and #9: one was about which music we liked, and the other about which food we liked.
I felt kinda lost in the later half of the second episode, so I might have to revisit later. It started getting difficult when he described which foods he personally liked. So there is definitely a difference between standard phrases like “what food do you like?” and constructs like “I like spicy food, but not from this restaurant”. The differences of complexity in the same episode is pretty nice, you get on the one hand pretty easy stuff to measure your baseline, and on the other something to challenge you and maybe elevate your listening comprehension.
If you have any questions regarding the contents of the episodes, please feel free to ask!
Thank you, I will definitely do that if it seems really hopeless. But I have found that it won’t stick as well if I don’t puzzle it out on my own. So I have to fail a few more times.
Oh yes, I totally agree with that! Just as a last resort, you know
Batch reply!
Day 6 - I didn’t get much done aside from listening to my Japanese music spotify playlist walking to work, and then I tried to listen to Sakura Tips when I got home from my friend’s house but I was too tired and gave up halfway through.
Day 7 - I had a class with my teacher in the morning talking about various topics like Little Women’s Christmas (what we call January 6th from my neck of the woods haha) and then watched the newest My Hero episode and it was like 66% recap so I probably didn’t need the subtitles. Later I finished Jojo Part 6 and got about halfway through The Way of the Househusband S2 (all EN subtitles).
Day 8 - I went to see Rashomon in the cinema, and I was really excited since I’d read the short stories a few years ago and was really happy to finally see it!
Day 9 - Finished The Way of the Househusband S2, started the new season of Vinland Saga, listened to Sakura Tips episodes 5&6 and Nihongo Con Teppei episodes 1&2
A concerning amount of this update is “I watched anime” or “I listened to Japanese music”… I’ll have to do better this week!!
January 9th!
Today I watched 2 more origami videos. I made a star and a whale.
Both came out quite nicely, but I need to get a little white sticker to add an eye to the whale!
I meant to do more listening today to be honest, but it was my first day back to work after Christmas and catching up with everything I needed to do really wore me out!
I’ll try to do more tomorrow.

Another day, another episode of The Jam Maker. I ended up learning the word for raspberry, which I realized I’d never come across before in Japanese! 木苺, “tree strawberry.” I decided to look into it, and raspberry plants do look like small trees. A colorful way of putting it.
I’m tired and have a headache, so just one episode today: Nihongo con Teppei for beginners ep. 100.
I did the first 33 minutes of an N1 listening exam. I swear half the battle with those things is sheer endurance. I’ll do the rest of it tomorrow as I didn’t have time today, and then see what I scored I guess. The office-y ones I definitely feel more shakey on.
Hi! I’m a little late to the challenge, I just joined WaniKani - hope it’s okay I still participate! I’m going to listen to Japanese music, watch Japanese news, and attend some work meetings where only Japanese is used.
Thanks!!

So-matome N3 Listening Ch.2 [2/6]. I am concerned a little about possible good replies to utter, refusal or acceptance (which is in another workbook I have).
Then, latter half of 緊急取調室 EP.5. I fear more of higher-ups here.
君の膵臓をたべたい Ch.4 [3/5]. Then, JP-CN podcast on holidays of both countries.

I knew of the few different uses of the って form in Japanese, but I never quite understood all of the nuances and just kind of went with the flow and based my understanding on context when I heard it in conversation.
So I wanted to share the video that I found today that explains 7 different usages of って, including how to differentiate it based on pronunciation. This was really helpful for me, so maybe somebody else finds this useful, too!

A couple of episodes of Alice in Borderland today. They speak quite clearly most of the time. There’s even one character who speaks in Kansai-ben, and surprisingly, I find it much easier to understand when it’s spoken than when it’s written down.
The trick is to sound it out in your head when reading For me that’s about the only way to understand dialect (or contractions, fwiw).
Speaking of which, I’m currently listening to this episode of the Rebuild podcast:
and I’m having so much fun with the speaking style of one of the guests with his constant じゃん and さあ. Even the host (who normally speaks really proper Japanese) starts using さあ halfway through
