I’ve been making an effort to not depend on the subtitles too much. I think it’s going okay, but I still feel more confident when I have something to refer back to if the spoken content goes by too fast for me. - Animal Guessing Game

I’ve been lax in posting – health problems, landlord problems, lots of problems. Still listening.
Last night I watched the first film club pick, The Happiness of the Katakuris! Very fun movie. It’s hard to know what to make of how much I followed. I was more or less being positive about it last night for the segments I did understand but it’s still pretty frustrating that someone can have a certain voice or say something a certain way and it literally feels like I don’t know 1 word in this language. And it happened often enough it’s certainly not an insignificant chunk. I dunno how you push past that; even the people I know who are really good at Japanese here seem to report wildly fluctuating abilities to do something like watch a movie. I’ll let you all know if I get there heh.

I’m at the point where only Old Men (the final boss of Japanese listening) confuse me and then funky dialects and singing. Trust if you binge enough movies it will eventually click. It took hundreds of hours tho and IMO you have to do it in the content you’re trying to get good at. Podcasts won’t help with movies as much as more movies will, ya know? But podcast listening will of course make you good at understanding podcasts and documentaries for documentaries… And etc

The problem is soon Japan is going to be half old men so we gotta get working hard 
Yeah that makes sense I suppose. My issue up to now has been that I can watch a stream or even do a podcast and just pick up some and it’s fine, but watching and not comprehending a movie is pretty annoying, generally. Forcing myself to actually do it is part of why I made the club, though. Though if I’m serious about it being time to deal with movies I probably need to watch some on my own; one every two weeks isn’t going to do enough.

Rewatching others movies you already have seen might help too as there will be less focus on following the plot and more on just parsing the language.
…also if you re-watch Love Exposure that’s 4 hours in one shot 
I actually want to re-watch it in Japanese with no subs but I need my life/schedule to calm down a bit more before I can set aside that many hours

I’ve always said it’s funny how you pick up random words really well based on what you’re doing in the language but there are such basic everyday things you’ll miss. Now I could make 盗撮 one of those words

I am using Satori Reader for reading practice and have done an hour today but I also count it under listening since I first listen to the narration of the chapter with sound effects before reading it myself.

Yesterday I watched the 3rd episode of できる猫, which was nice to get something different in my listening practice, but I struggled a bit in some moments this time. I think I was less focused than usual too. Otherwise, same as usual for the podcasts. Today I’ll try to finish this week’s Kurzgesagt, and probably listen to more podcasts during lunch and chores.

I finished this week’s Kurzgesagt, but didn’t listen to a lot of podcasts - I was feeling a bit distracted and tired during the day. But I also managed to study quite a bit of grammar, so that’s fine - can’t do everything every day.

みんな、こんにちは！I’m know I’m joining very late, but I had the sudden realization after disappointing my new sensei with my terrible speaking ahaha that while I’ve read about 20 novels (350+ hours of reading fwiw) at this point in Japanese, I’ve clocked <150 hours of listening in comparison. My abilities are very mismatched, oops.
So this challenge (which I will hopefully continue into September) is going to serve as my chance to focus on listening A LOT on a daily basis in Japanese, instead of like, a few episodes of anime or a drama per month. I’d like to get my abilities to a point where I’m comfortable listening to most anime/dramas (SOL/romance/fantasy/gaming/action; although not historical/war anime like Kingdom) without Japanese subtitles, since I have a tendency to just read the subs and not actually listen. Hopefully some of the vocab and expressions from the SOL and romance anime/dramas will start bleeding into my speech and help me sound more natural as well!
Daily Goal: 4 hours of listening per day.

Last night I played some more Yakuza 0. Onto chapter 5! Which is back in Tokyo, so no more mumbly Osaka-ben, for now at least. Instead there’s mumbly old guys doing what they do best, being 100% unintelligible.
I haven’t had chance to watch anything but here’s a 10 second instructional video about soft close doors which YouTube shoved in my recommendations.

I had a lesson with my tutor today, so lots of listening practise. We talked about laundry, a game called A Little to the Left, and my plans for a week off work I have coming up in August. We also practised using ~からといって。

Day 28! Managed to fit in about an hour of playing Lost Judgment today. I haven’t done that in quite a while cause using the TV the console is hooked up to doesn’t work great with my wife’s schedule, so I’ve just focused elsewhere. Good times today though. I really wasn’t pausing to check the log much; it felt a lot smoother than past sessions. Some combination of the context and relevant words building on each other for sure, but also I think I’m seeing results from how hard I’ve been hitting reading recently. Came across several words I learned or reinforced pretty recently, so that’s nice.

Just a little bit of listening today - I listened to an episode of JapanesePod101’s Lower intermediate series.
There is a little story arc going on in the current episodes that is about a school reunion. It’s been fun to listen to so far.
