Life After Level 60: Curious to know what fellow WK graduates have been up to since hitting level 60?

Level 91 now, took the N1 last December just waiting on the result. Did pretty good I think after failing N1 in 2023. I used the shin kanzen N1 series and have been reading through the ベストエッセイ series nightly before bed.

Congratulations! You created a topic that actually pulled me out of lurking with my first ever reply. I’ve seen it mentioned in a few of the replies, but I am also working through burning everything post-60 (sitting on 32 unburned currently) and had intended to wait to make my own post until after that happened.

I had to go back and look and I officially hit level 60 03-29-2022, but I likely finished the Kanji from 60 around mid April as I was slowing down by then. I won’t give a particular timeline of what has happened since, but I’ll just post some of what I’ve done in general since I’ve been busy with other things recently and am in review mode only at the moment.

  • Began reading manga (roughly 60 books across several series)
  • Read my 1st (and 2nd) light novels. This is something I need to get back into as I’ve got the remaining 6 from a series that I bought physical copies of in Japan
  • Taken 3 trips to Japan
  • Joined a local conversation group to practice speaking and listening in person
  • Studied thru N2 grammar on Bunpro
  • Watch native content (vtuber streams) without subs or JP sub clips
  • Played a few simpler games in Japanese

Yeah, there was a point early in my language learning journey where I was like “I’ll be fluent in 2 years, surely” and well, clearly not lol. Though also a bit of “what is fluent?”, since I can read a lot of stuff I want to read pretty well.

I’ve used the time freed up from Wanikani for improving how much listening I was doing, and also very recently started doing some production. The amount of mistakes I make in production at this point are sort of humbling, but it’s something that’s still at the “early lots of progress” phase to feel the improvements coming quickly while reading and listening are in the slow march of the intermediate stage.
