Title says it all, I am at level 10 and have recently in the past few weeks gotten my level 1 items to Enlightened. It says three months before I can do them again to burn them. I see others who are at my level and have already burned most of the first kanji levels, yet I’m still needing to wait another 2 and a half months. I don’t recall getting many of them wrong and most kanji in the early levels I know for a fact I’ve never gotten, so why such a long wait time for me when others are already seeing burns?
No, you’re just doing great
Burns have to do with time, not levels. It takes around 6 months total (4h, 8h, 23h, 1d23h, 1w, 2w, 1m, 4m) for a item to be available for burning.
Some people get the burns at higher levels, but that means that they leveled up faster than others in those 6 initial months. As an example, I got burns only around level 26.
Okay! That makes sense. It seemed like the timing on WaniKani’s side was correct but after reading through a few threads I took note that some had burned by level 10. I’m averaging now around 9 days per level so based on the math, I didn’t expect a burn but I just wanted to make sure there wasn’t anything else I’m doing to hold myself back.
This means you are advancing faster than other folks you compare with. If you stay at level 1 forever (never do lessons for lvl 2 radicals), in 6 months you may have all items burned while still being level 1.
I’m lvl 17 (2 days from 18) and I haven’t burned a single radical or kanji.
Seems like it takes half a year. Thanks for this thread btw, it helped me clear that up.
Now that I know the timing and my own pace, it makes more sense to me as well. I’m going to keep working at this pace but I’m excited to start seeing those burns happen!
Don’t worry, I’m level 22 and I still don’t have any burns. You don’t burn items for at least 5 months after seeing them. People who are level 10 with burns have either taken a significant break or are going at a very slow pace.
I will be level 20 before my first burns as well (if I do not mess up the kanji now XD!) I am in the second half of level 19 and my first burns will hopefully come in 2 weeks. Kind of scared of the work-load… XD
I might take a small break with new lessons once I am level 20 to face the first wave of burns, because I just know I will mess up a lot XD.
I can confirm I got my first burns in August 2019. Knowing I joined WK in February 2019. It fits Leveling does not trigger burns per se, it’s the regularity at which you do your reviews that allows you to brun items. But the initial six month time is incompressible as per @jprspereira’s crystal clear answer.
Now I recall that I had the same question as you @xnootxnootx when I reached level 10. I was just eager to get some burned items already!

This is totally random, but I remember once seeing a person saying they wanted to first burn all the content of the free levels before proceeding to get a paid subscription.
burns don’t mean much else than that they won’t pop up for review anymore, mind you. this is a fatal trap, unless you read a lot.
I’ve been trying my best lately to utilize example sentences and practice using the kanji to reinforce my readings, even though I may not fully grasp some of the grammar quite yet. I also try to read back through some of my trouble kanji to make sure I don’t fail to get it next time it comes for review.
