Learning Japanese (beginner)

Hi, I have finished learning hirigana and katakana and I have no idea what to do next.

Is it worth wasting my time on apps, Just to learn some basic phrases and words? Or should I just focus on a Japanese learning book instead?

If you’re going to comment to get a tutor, could you please recommend some online? I’m a high school student and I prefer one with no face time or call if that’s possible because I have limited time and get disturbed a lot so I can’t take a full hour tutor on a call or face time ( if you understand) and also English isn’t my first language although my native language is actually quite similar to Japanese (just some of the words and pronunciation)

I would recommend checking out this guide:Learn Japanese: A Ridiculously Detailed Guide

As for using apps it depends, you can just go straight towards learning books but I would recommend learning some basic kanji and vocab first. It really helps me a lot with learning new grammar because I don’t have to look up every second word.

No matter what you decide to do however I wish you the best of luck!

I think this guide is quite good – A Year to Learn Japanese. There are also other guides.

IMO, you can learn grammar immediately if you don’t have problem remembering basic vocab in the grammar book.

Vocab is a different thing, grammar exercises might not give enough of that. Kanji could be a good way to learn and retain a lot of words (despite unexpected word meanings away from the Kanji sometimes).

There is this big resource Wiki from Japanese Language > Resources

PDF and the linked thread could give some good strategic advice for language learning.

Hi Annelai,

I’m not sure what you mean by “could you please record some online?” Are you looking for prerecorded online lessons?

Hi Annnelai, for me I started off with this website before buying some textbooks, the one that was recommended to me was was marugoto, I have included a link for you to have a look if you’re interested.

Oh, sorry that was a typo. I meant ‘please, recommend some books’

I have used both Genki and Marugoto recently. I really should use them more. I agree with the poster who recommended trying Marugoto online. One advantage of the Marugoto series is that they come in tons of languages, English, Spanish, Thai, Indonesian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean…. You can chose your language online or order the books.
