Just reached Level 11 and need your advice

Hi there, I reached level 11 (yay) and wanted to get your advice on whether there is any book that I can start to read. I love wanikani but I suppose no harm trying to actually read and understand words from the book too. Appreciate all your advice

head to the bookclubs and start in the ABBC (absolute beginner) jump in on something previously read or wait for something you are interested in. Ask away on the forums any questions you have and enjoy !!!

wk doesn’t really prepare you for reading in any meanful way (imo).
assuming someones japanese is limited to wk lvl 11… (no grammar studies) reading will be super painful … and even still that first book is always super tough but it gets easier

Natively is an awesome resource and highly recommend if you are searching for stuff by level. It’s still a free resource, although it has cost me some money (finding things I had to buy) :money_with_wings:

Based on my own experiences…if someone has zero grammar, recommend at a minimum getting the N5 grammar studied (don’t know to know it all perfectly but get through it and get at least 10-20% of N4 or so…) before trying to start reading. Will help with breakdown some of the incoming pain and frustration.

of course all of this is just my opinion - ultimately do what works best for you!
good luck!!!

This might be a silly answer😅, but you could try getting started with a textbook like Genki 1. You’ll be able to practice some reading but also learn a lot of useful grammar and knowledge along the way.

Since you’re already familiar with some kanji and vocabulary, it might really help you digest the textbook faster and more efficiently. Plus, it can prepare you and set you up for trying other things afterwards like short stories or manga😁.

I was (to a certain extent - there was a lot of jisho-ing) able to read NHKやさしい at Level 11 - I’d try that: NHKやさしいことばニュース | NEWS WEB EASY
Usually the weather news articles are simpler, while the foreign relations ones are more complicated (and involve some grammar points)
