Keep 'em coming!
This is where I peak in life and never win anything ever again.

I’m not trying to influence you or anything, just wanted to point out that one of the books has a cat on the cover… :innocent:

…and someone changed their vote so Silent Witch was winning by one.
So I also changed mine to keep the tie going

I think that was just @MaraVos voting. At least I remember it being a tie before that.

My heart can’t take this anymore
A higher quality version of Pooh's soul leaving his body 🙏🏻

To be fair, I can make that exact position with my hand fairly easily. I just wouldn’t choose to. Oh and I am a doctor.

Tried to do it just now. Three things popped and my pointer finger is now numb.

Maybe you should see a doctor.

Congratulations, you’re a witch now

Please don’t put me on a cringey book cover

Actually it’s art and you’re a snob for not liking it.

So anyway does anybody know a website that delivers anime body pillows to Portugal?

By the way… maybe we could dial back the anti-weeb jokes in this thread? Being a forum for learning Japanese, I assume a fair amount of users like anime/manga and the surrounding culture a lot. In general I’ve found the WK forums to be really welcoming and inclusive, and it would be great if it stays that way.

Sorry if me calling the cover ‘weeby’ offended people. That was certainly not my intention. I often call myself a weeb in self-deprecating jest so the word holds no particular venom for me, but of course such things don’t always come across well in writing!

I don’t mean any harm when I make weeb jokes and I don’t think anyone else does either, but if it actually does upset people then I’ll make sure to avoid them in the future.

I will not repent for mocking terrible weeby character design because it is everywhere in modern Japanese (or Japanese-inspired) mainstream media and I’m so sick of it. I don’t have an issue with “weebs” who are just people who are super into Japanese pop culture, but this commercial Generic Waifu #249879 copy-paste slop is worthy of derision IMO.

Maybe “weeb” is too broad of term for that but I don’t really know how else to define it.

And frankly the “wow I don’t feel welcome on these forums anymore because somebody doesn’t like a cringe cover” when like 90% of the avatars on this very thread and everywhere else are manga or anime-derived and the vast majority of media discussion in the community centers around this universe is a bit overly dramatic IMO.

But OK, for the sake of keeping it light I’ll tone it down from now on.

Also I need to find where I can buy this:

my interpretation...

I’m just wondering if there is a misunderstanding as this misses the point I think Tobias was trying to make. I think this is the misunderstanding:

My understanding is the term weeb can be heard by Japanese learners as much more derogatory than that.

So to put it more plainly since you’re quite a direct person: Critiquing poor design is fine, it’s specifically labelling it weeb that is rude. (Isn’t it weird to label native content or design as weeb anyway? That’s a judgment on the non Japanese person interacting with Japanese culture right? ) so I think the point is just to say that label might alienate people. In life in general it’s labels that are alienating right? So critique away, call something “copy paste slop”, but maybe consider before using labels on Japanese learners because they might feel a lot more off-putting to them than to you

By the way, just wondering if the poll should have been closed by now…? @NicoleIsEnough

It looks closed to me, no? I don’t seem to have the option to change my votes.

Thanks for calling me! I fell into this trap called “work” and just got out of my last meeting of the day…

Anyway, the Poll is done (this time for real, I think ), and

We Have a Tie :tada:

Between the voters for the two winners, i.e. 妊娠カレンダー and サイレント・ウィッチ, there is very few overlap (only 3 voters voted for both of them, if I counted correctly, while 28 voted for just one book). Therefore I’d like to evaluate various options and have a tie-breaking poll as well as try to follow this historical precedent of having a narrow decision with little overlap to figure out how to continue:

First scenario: Classical tie-breaking - we pick one winner and read it, and have a new poll afterwards

Which book do you most want to read: (You do not have to vote if you like them both or if you like none)

  • 妊娠カレンダー
  • サイレント・ウィッチ
0 voters

Which books would you be fine reading along with the book club? (I.e. even if it isn’t your first pick, you still plan to buy it and read with us)

  • 妊娠カレンダー
  • サイレント・ウィッチ
0 voters

Second scenario: Both 妊娠カレンダー and サイレント・ウィッチ are read at the same time. What would you do?

  • Only read 妊娠カレンダー
  • Only read サイレント・ウィッチ
  • Try to read both, but prioritize 妊娠カレンダー
  • Try to read both, but prioritize サイレント・ウィッチ
  • Read neither
  • Not sure
0 voters

Extra scenario: We read 妊娠カレンダー first (simply because it is shorter), then サイレント・ウィッチ (that’s about 500 pages, so 33 weeks at the current pace, delaying the next poll for quite a while). Would you agree to that, and what will you do?

  • Agree (will read both)
  • Agree (will only read one)
  • Disagree (want a new poll as normal)
  • Not sure
0 voters

What will we make of this?

I must confess I have no clear plan right now. I think I would like to pick the solution that makes the largest number of club participants happy. Let’s hope we can find it in the poll results :innocent:

Oh and by the way

We had a pretty large number of books drop out in this round due to too little interest in three polls in a row. These are:

  • きらきらひかる
  • 嵐のピクニック
  • パレード
  • 旅猫リポート

which means we have lots of space for new nominations

Nooooooo not Japanese Friends :sob:
