Imagineer Kanken Game - Switch vs 3DS

I am curious to try one of the 漢検 training games. I specifically want to know if anyone has tried any combination of two or more of the DS / 3DS / Switch versions and what they like and dislike. I have read some reviews of the Switch version online but nothing that directly compares to the 3DS version. There is this thread, which is why I am making this post on the WaniKani forums I guess.

My personal メリット and デメリット:

Switch:

  • Latest version
  • “AI“ simulated test mode (?)
  • It seems like copies come with a 30 day free trial of this other 早押し!漢字スタジアム kanji quiz show game? I guess that’s interesting but it appears to work like a subscription which really turns me off.
  • No region lock
  • Screenshots

3DS:

  • Cheaper
  • I prefer the DS family pen stylus
  • Region lock (not an issue for me)
  • Can’t take screenshots for flash cards (You can if you make some changes to your system but it’s a little less convenient than on Switch)

Notes:

  • It seems that the character recognition is a persistent problem among all the versions (although seemingly a very small problem compared to how many kanji there are but YMMV)?
  • I don’t mind the Switch pen experience with Brain Training although I do prefer the DS stylus.
  • I don’t actually intend to take the kanken any time soon (but of course I probably would like to eventually). I just like these types of games.

I am one of those people who is getting back into 3DS stuff so I’d like to have another excuse to carry it around, but to be honest, if we’re talking convenience, I use my Switch 2 a lot more including carrying it with me (although I don’t carry game systems with me anymore that often in general).

I am honestly leaning toward the Switch one just because I imagine it would be the most up-to-date for whatever but the 3DS pen and nostalgia (and cheaper price) are drawing me in.

Wasn’t the 3DS store shut down? Thought you couldn’t buy them any more.

You can buy a cartridge

I’ve met a couple people who swear by the original DS game, but I’m not sure why. I think it has to do with the way it tracks progress.

Game Gengo did a comparison video about all the DS family games. Unfortunately he doesn’t talk about the Switch game, but it might help you decide what features to look for
