Idiom Question

Was reading a visual novel and read 「噂をすればお隣さんじゃない?」. This comes right as the main character is thinking about his new neighbor and his mom says that. I know “噂をすれば” means something like “If you tell a rumor” or “If you gossip”, but could it also be an equivalent for the idiom “Speak of the Devil”, so “Speak of the Devil, isn’t it you neighbor”? Maybe I’m overthinking this.

It would seem so, according to Jisho

  1. speak of the devil and he shall appear; speak rumours of someone and they shall appear

噂をすれば影が射(さ)す。「speak of the devil and he shall appear」
