I hate the idea that burned items don’t show up again. I would love it if there were an option to make them reappear once a year, and if you failed them, they would go back to Enlightened.
I second (or third?) this motion! Our only recourse so far is to start reading elsewhere in order to encounter “in the wild” as much vocabulary as we can that we already “know”, so it sticks!
This. But, I have no hope that it will happen. It’s something many, many people would want and would help mitigate some of the other weaknesses of wanikani. But, thanks for bringing it up.

unfortunately, while the WK system does support manually resetting burned items back to apprentice level, there is nothing in the API to interact with burned items, except to get a list of them. and even if there was less convenient way to automate un-burning things, if the only option is to set it all the way back to apprentice 1, that would be rather overwhelming…
AFAIK you need to unburn them one at a time. It’s a slog when you have hundreds.
Would be awesome if the WK team can add a way to un-burn items to their API.
Using Smoldering Durtles, you can run self-study quizzes of only burned items. Set a parameter for one level at a time and keep a notepad close to write down whatever you got wrong. Make physical flashcards, or Anki flashcards, for each item. Review again.
That’s how I’d do it if I was far enough along for it to matter yet.
