I made two native speakers take this simple kanji knowledge quiz

I did it two times, first time was 1900 but I missed two I should know from Wanikani so I did it again and got 2100 because there where some lucky rare ones I knew. Between attempt 1 and 2 there was a session with errors I think. I think I know more Kanjis outside the Jouyoukanji range but am still a bit shaky with some of the Jouyoukanji so it seems like a good guess.

If it is only about the meaning… otherwise I have to do it again because I didn’t consider the reading at all.

With On- yomi I got 2400  But I was lucky because some 1級 Kanji I knew appeared.

I kept doing it now until the 2400 fell to 2050 and raised to 2111 again where it stayed for a longer time and which is accurate I think. But for example in the case of 錦 I only knew the Kun- yomi but counted it as correct anyway.

Yeah, I don’t really think this has much real world relevance because of the points you listed. I didn’t recognize 其 and got deducted a ton for such an “easy” word . I think having practiced writing helped my score a lot, but still kinda weird having some really obscure kanji thrown at me right from the beginning. Would make more sense to start building from easier ones. Don’t show me 愍 (some weird alternative kanji I’ve never seen) as my first one

Yeah, I was shown some weird alternate kanji early on as well. And the funny thing is that I often understand alternate kanji in context (even if I’d never seen it before), but usually I wouldn’t recognize them out of context.

Is that kanji even considered “easy” / common? 其の (etc.) is obviously a common word, but it’s not super common written with the kanji itself. In any case, I had a few “easy” ones that I failed too that knocked off like 50+ points.

I may take the quiz again tomorrow to see how variable it is. Maybe I’ll do a version where if I recognize one of the example words then I vote “know it” to see how much it impacts my score.

I answered 501 questions with a final “score” of 150 kanji, which is about what I expect. I judged myself strict, so that if I did not recognize the kanji on first glance I considered it “do not know”. I’ve not done serious Japanese study since 2018 and several kanji I know I’ve burned on WaniKani were missed (sorry, 四, I’ll make it up to you later).

I think I hit a bug - I was averaging around 1700 (which is probably fair) then got two in a row wrong and it then dropped me to 500, then to 100 despite getting the next one right.

What did you get wrong, 一 and 二? :joy:

(after 295 qs)
I like the graphs they give you

It also can check text for difficulty, but I don’t know how accurate I find it

Maybe someday I can aim to be one of the users in the rarer estimates

Dude I found that too
I mean not to that degree but sometimes you’ll answer something correctly and it’ll move the estimate down

Is this typed correctly? Not judging just that’s a low number to go the trouble of answering 500 questions for. So I figured either you have great stamina or typed that wrong

No I don’t think it should be. It’s probably a bug, because I think it knocked off hundreds. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in text either.

Well, that’s actually right. Unfortunately, some of kanjis I got for grade 2-3, I remember really bad.

其方そなた shows up a ton in 本好き. :joy:

Ah yea true. I was only thinking of 其の when I said that.

Although, that’s not 本好き.
And one (well, three, obviously) example(s) does not mean anything, I know.

After 10 attempts I got 783. After 30 attempts, I got 786. According to WK, I know 785.

Not bad.

Not those, can’t remember the second but 其 was the other!

Did 55 and apparently I know 1650. According to wkstats I should know 1672, so that’s actually pretty accurate!

It’s just an algorithm. I got that too. I forgot something like 麗, perhaps.

Typed correct. Less so me having great stamina and more so it not being difficult to hit the right-arrow key dozens of times in a row.

I’m glad you guys are enjoying this. As for answering right and the number known going down, are you guys just stopping when this happens? The same thing happened to me too, but after answering more kanji, the number went back up. The test is algorithm-based, and the more you answer the more accurate your estimate becomes. The estimate also should fluctuate much less as you answer more, unless you’re studying kanken level 1 kanji.
