This update feels like it was done by people who never use Wanikani to learn.
Most changes don’t have a reason, nor improve anything.
The users don’t like it, and prefer the older version.
I could not agre more!
Agree.
It is strange to me that they’ve put time and effort to make WK experience objectively worse.
Nobody likes change at first.
Give it a week.
You’ll live.
Agree, I think it also speaks volumes that the most people who are complaining are Lifetime users
“Nobody likes change at first” you don’t know what’s on anybody’s mind besides yours, changes are liked, when they are good.
ratio + ratio
And what is considered good is entirely subjective. You not liking the changes and thinking they are bad doesn’t equate everyone else here thinking they are bad.
Bold generalization. There are enough users entirely indifferent to the changes. As always it’s the people who don’t like the update that are the most vocal on here. That doesn’t give us any stats on how many users actually like or hate this update.
My tip: Give yourself and script writers time to adapt to the update. The dust will settle and scripts will most likely be functional again. If you can’t deal with it, free alternatives exist for you to try, nobody forces you to stick to this service.
“entirely subjective” why even put effort into anything
My tip: if it doesn’t affect you, and the update is perfect according to your subjectivity, go do lessons / reviews and stop writing useless things here.
Oh it does affect me, but I don’t see a point in crying over it rn. While you were doing that, I already finished all my reviews and am waiting patiently for script devs to fix my fav script
right back at ya <3
From my limited perspective, it doesn’t really seem like the changes were done with a strong, immediate UX focus in mind, but having delved into the actual code change, it seems like they were done more for stability/product cohesion purposes. I’m guessing this change will make future maintenance and improvements easier, so it might be helpful to consider this the base of the changes, with possible improvements maybe on the horizon?
If you look at it from that perspective, maybe WaniKani was as good as it could be with how it was set up before, but with these changes it can be much better. At least that’s what I’m hoping.
+1, I’ll submit a revert PR myself if I need to
Everyone has their own opinion on the update the WaniKani team has rolled out. In my opinion, I don’t really mind the changes too much. There are some things that I don’t like with the update, and there are some things I do like. As the staff said, they are listening to all of our suggestions on the update and they want to know what they can improve on. For example, they are going to replace the review summary page with something else. The user script issue is also only temporary. Eventually, all of the popular scripts will be compatible with this update. I hope that all of the issues that we have with the update will be addressed soon. For now however, he just will have to deal with the changes.
Is anything really worse besides scripts needing updates?
Is there a way to bring back the recap page after you finish your reviews? I always like to look that over and see how I did. I mean after 200+ reviews it’s hard to remember what you missed.
Hoping there is something in the settings/UI to bring it back.
Totally agree. Without the summary now there are no stats to get the idea how good I’ve performed in the last session. Percents and mistakes were a pretty efficient way to sum it up. Worse still I can’t set apart the entries I keep making mistakes on, because stats miss in the “mistakes” section too. The updated UI makes you waste time on scrolling and adjusting the text size so the sample sentences are in the center of the screen.
This update for the sake of updating made things different in a worse way.
This is one of the features I do miss. I believe the staff team is working on an alternative however. I can’t wait to see what they will have for us.
Actually have a really good example of this when VRChat added Easy Anti-Cheat. Their discord was rife with complaints, people left and right saying they would quit unless it was reverted. The main complaint being with regards to accessibility mods like text-to-speech and such.
A week later nobody cares, user counts remain unchanged, and resources go into adding those features over the coming months.
Similar thing happened when they changed the UI (to an arguably better one).
Sorry to be that guy but can anyone sum up the update for me ? I only ever use Tsurukame so for me nothing changed.
Let me sum up.
Buttercup is marrying Humperdinck in a little less than half an hour. So all we have to do is get in, break up the wedding, steal the princess, and make our escape…. After I kill Count Rugen.
