How to achieve conversational level japanese in a few months?

I would be absolutely terrified to go to college in Japan a year after starting to learn the language. The universities there are so competitive to get into, so I’d be interested to see what’s required to get in as a foreigner.

And you’ll want to look this up to be sure (I’m on phone on lunch at work right now), but I’ve read in several different places that college can require knowledge of up to 3k kanji depending on major, so, uh. Maybe major in English? Lol.

Still, I wish you the best and hope you’ll tell us how it goes!

All universities and colleges aren’t competitive just because they’re located in Japan.

I went to school at a college with a sister school in Niigata. I lived with a Japanese student from that school for two non-consecutive years. In the first year his English was not good. In our last year he was competent. Relevant because I could have gone to school at his school if I wanted to also. With having just the most basic knowledge of Japanese.

If they are accepting the student knowing they don’t read, write or speak the language, then obviously it isn’t competitive in that sense. Nothing to worry about in that regard.
