How fast should I be going through Wanikani?

I haven’t started burning yet (4 months in, level 10), so take this for what it’s worth, but I’ve settled in at 15 lessons per day (about 2 weeks per level), while my wife has been doing about 3 per day. I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep up my pace indefinitely with my busy life, but my observation has been that I’m absorbing the material much better than my wife because of our relative speeds.
Once you learn a kanji, hitting lessons with vocab words that use that kanji will significantly help you retain the kanji. I’ve observed that my wife’s pace, while comfortable for her, is so slow that the kanji aren’t being retained very well. Yes, she’s doing her reviews, so she’s getting the SRS repetition and will learn them all eventually, but if you move through the vocab at a good clip, you actually get a lot more practice with each of the kanji as you learn the vocab.
So, find a pace that works for you, but keep in mind that consistently going too slow might actually be disadvantageous.

I keep an eye on my review forecast (WaniKani Ultimate Timeline).
If I see a lot of really tall bars coming up in the next few days I might only bite off 5 new lessons instead of my usual 15. Also if I know my life is going to get hairy in the coming weeks/months, I’ll slow down on lessons, but I try to do at least 1 every day to keep the habit going strong.

Go at a pace that works for you. It doesn’t really matter. The most important things are to be consistent (every day, do your reviews and/or learn new items) and don’t give up/

Can’t recommend the timeline enough for planning when to do reviews, so that you have a manageable amount each hour and don’t end up overburdening yourself. Also, make sure to take into account the buildup over your sleeping period(s), that can become a big hurdle sometimes.

Oh, and for new stuff try to plan out your day with it. Assuming you get it correct each time, you’ll have your first review 4hrs later and then 8hrs after that, so try to plan to do new lessons such that you can do those first two reviews before sleep (as that will typically go past the review window), and at least for me those first two reviews being done on time really cement how well I’ll be doing on those items or if I’ll end up having to repeat them over and over.
