Have You Reset? (Why? When?) + Poll

Took a day off, bad choice. Right now I’m considering reseting, but probably won’t ^^

I would never reset again unless I reached level 60. Maybe not even then. Something to remember is that for a lot of people every 3 levels is a month of work. If I had just buckled down on everything instead of resetting at level 13 the first time I could have gotten everything under control in a month. Instead it took 4 months and I had to review a bunch of things that I already knew.

After I get to level 60 I haven’t decided if I’d reset or just selectively unburn things.

That’s what I’ve been wondering about as well. Although I’m about a year and a half away from that. I figure I could always use the 10k vocab deck.

I think @rfindley had burned everything. What do you do for further studies?

Nope, and after I’m done with WK (in 5-6 months), I don’t really see any point in restarting either. I guess there would be some benefit in dealing with the burned items I can’t remember (quickly enough), but going through the whole SRS program again would be a waste of time. I would rather spend the time on reading and acquiring vocabulary/expressions. Y’know, opportunity cost and all that jazz.

Rather than resurrect burns, I continued using my Quiz script to cycle through levels as a refresher. I’ve moved on since then, and these days I’m mostly reading, studying grammar, and working on grammar tools.

Although I’ve never reset my progress, I was pretty close to that at some point. Last month I took a longer vacation in Japan (3 weeks) and I turned on vacation mode for that time.
After I got back from vacation and switched off vacation mode, I realized that I forgot more than I expected. I could answer about 30% of the cards correctly, so at that point I was considering jumping back a level or two.
In the end I decided to keep going through the cards no matter what, and I did that right. Every day I improved a lot, and after a week I was back in shape.

I started WK, got to level 7, decided I’d rather do other things with my life for half a year, came back and reset to level 4. Most of the stuff I had gotten to master+ I still remembered when I came back, but vacation mode* screwed me over so I couldn’t study items I had forgotten in higher levels because they were stuck in time. I tried to use a script to reorder by level, but it didn’t help with the items I had to wait on. Eventually I said screw it and just reset back down rather than deal with the headaches. It was an easy month that I used to reinforce everything I had learned to that point and focus on grammar points which was like a double boost to my confidence.

No regrets whatsoever. In the right circumstances resets are well worth it. If I find myself stalling out in the future I’m probably going to reset myself back a few weeks rather than keep myself in a difficult situation that might waste more time.

*I’m never enabling vacation mode again. I would much rather come back to a big pile of reviews than to have reviews held back when I need them the most.

Ah good point. I’ll keep it in mind.

Well, vacation mode isn’t really meant for 6 month gaps, but I don’t really get why you were bothered by how it worked out. You say you couldn’t study some stuff… But they were gonna come back at some point.

No, I haven’t, but I should have reset level 1 when I actually started using. Instead I just jumped in this January and really started using WK and my timer looks super weird like I’ve taken forever to get where I am. In reality, it was all spent on level one…

I think that’s due to the number of people who seem to quit between levels 11 and 14.

EDIT: As @Kumirei also pointed out.

I reset at about 15ish, and that was mainly due to the fact that moving and a bunch of other things happening pulling me away from my studies for a while, and then when I got started in trying to get back to things, I had forgotten most of my previous material, and every time I tried to dig out of the hole, it wasn’t really working. Also, that level had taken longer than the rest of my levels combined, so I decided to restart instead of pushing through and forgetting a lot of the little things I had burned already. probably a bad decision, but I think I’d rather start over anyway.

I just came back from a slightly lengthy break and had about 2100 reviews + 300 lessons. (I let my subscription stop and even before that hadn’t bothered to turn on vacation mode…) After realising how much of the recent stuff I’d forgotten I decided to reset but only by a few levels (from 23 down to 21) because I didn’t want the opposite effect of being demotivated because of having to repeat loads of stuff. It was a really good compromise, I’m able to focus on the current level’s kanji and vocab without much trouble and can reduce the queue at the same time. Without this I reckon it would’ve taken me twice as long to do this! I would totally say however that you need to be careful not to reset too far because you obviously can’t get the data back. Even a few more levels gone for me and I probably would have been pretty annoyed about it!

Back in Summer of 2015 I was at level 9, went away for vacation for 5 weeks, and never put my WaniKani in vacation mode. Once I came back, I didn’t feel like doing any reviews so I held off on it for a few more weeks, and then ended up forgetting about it the entire time. December of 2015 I try to get back in, but I had around a thousand of reviews to do, I managed to get it down to 850, and over the course of a week, got it down to 700. But there was so much that I had forgotten and I was trying to power my way through it. This continues up until I reset my account, which happened early April where I noticed I could do it in the settings. I’m currently level 6, and I honestly couldn’t be any happier. I remembered the first four levels pretty well, but now I’m trying to pace my self through it instead of burning my way through it.

Basically for me, I just needed a reset button because it wasn’t really reviews for me since I couldn’t remember anything, I had forgotten and I needed to relearn everything again.

No level marker! You don’t exist! You’re a ghost!

@viet Another forum bug :wink:

Nice one! I was gonna put that but fell asleep. Great catch.

I guess I am in the Death levels :ghost:

Maybe if I I had a lifetime sub and I got to level 60 I would but it depends on if I was still struggling with leeches by then

I had not used wanikani or any japenese study for over two years, I was only level 4 pervious to my reset. I didn’t feel confident that I knew my Burt items and figured if I did know them it wouldn’t take long to burn them again. As well give me a slow successful start to build my momentum and motivation.
If I was over lvl 7 I’m not sure I would have done it though.
