Genki grammar question - この vs これ

Hi everyone. Just wondering if someone could give me some advice. My natural instinct is to put number 2 as my answer but according to the answer book it should be structured like question 1. Are they both right or is there a reason why you can’t use この in this situation?

Excuse my handwriting lol I’m getting back into revising grammar and it’s been a while…

このさいふはだれですか = As for this wallet, who is it?
このさいふはだれのですか = As for this wallet, whose is it?
これはだれのさいふですか = As for this, whose wallet is it?

What you said is grammatical (except I believe you’d need it to be だれの to make it possessive, see above), it just looks like the point of the exercise is これ and not この, so that’s what they say the answer is. You can tell that’s what they’re looking for based on the response (They use それ instead of そのさいふ). But of course in a real conversation the response’s construction would be based on the question’s, not the other way around.

Edit: now as for which is more natural speech (このさいふはだれのですか or これはだれのさいふですか), I don’t know

この goes with a noun

これ is a noun and goes by itself

It’s not just the この, it’s the entire sentence structure.
look at the answer as the key for your question structure
2. それわたしのさいふです。
answers the question
you: これだれのさいふです

That’s pretty much the principle they try to teach you at this point.
