Hi Jenny, can you please explain what led to this change? The meaning shift from “action” to “effect” is a bit subtle. Do you mean to imply that [作用] (https://www.wanikani.com/vocabulary/作用) refers to the influence of a non-living / immaterial subject on an object?

Hi @omoide! That’s a really good question. 作用 is tricky to translate into English because its range of use doesn’t match any one English word. As you said, it often refers to an inanimate subject’s effect/action/influence on an object, rather than a person’s actions (that would be 行動). “Effect” isn’t perfect either, but it’s a common translation of 作用 in everyday contexts, and we think it’s a bit closer to its range of use, so we decided to switch the two meanings.

I hope that helps clear it up a little!
