I just noticed that on honto.jp you can get some free manga volumes by going to my profile>coupons and then selecting free tab. (I’m not sure if they are free for some time to read or to add to cart and proceed with 0 yen purchase). I hope you will find something interesting!

You can also check out The BookWalker Freebies Thread - it lists lots of manga that are free for a limited period of time (but if you “buy” them during that period, you can keep them forever). It’s usually only vol. 1-3 or something of any given series, but it should be enough to let you safely decide whether you want to continue reading the series for money or not.

Just to mention that most sites seem to have the same free manga, so you can check the site you like. E.g., ebookjapan, kindle, etc.
