"Flesh&Blood" Vol. 12 - Pirate Series Reading Club šŸ“ā€ā˜ ļø ⛵

I actually started this volume a while back at the beginning of summer when I was headed away on vacation but then ended up not getting the time after that. I’ve been procrastinating writing my thoughts since I got back. Finally managing to get into it, It’s been a while now since I read this part so I’m gonna keep things more general, although I did do another skim through (and then maybe couldn’t help myself from reading the next chapter as well). I’m really loving the new art style starting this volume, the cover’s so pretty!

Chapter 1-3
Finally the start of the escape plan! I wasn’t expecting Raul to just light the place on fire but that certainly works to get people out and cause enough chaos to make getting away easier. Raul uses this as an excuse to move Kaito away from the castle, where he puts on a big performance to make it look like Kaito’s been abducted and he tried really hard to stop it. He also continues to be a snake by this time using Leo’s life as a bargaining chip against Kaito. After this Kaito is reunited with everyone, that scene with Nigel was so sweet. :face_holding_back_tears: From there they all pack into a carriage to start their journey across the mountains while secretly planning how they can break off from Raul’s lackeys before they try to kill them. To do this they decide to try and get Rick on their side like they did with Pablo. It seems like Raul’s main weakness is that everyone who works under him hates his guts so there’s a limit to how far he can get controlling them with fear once they’re given an opportunity to get away.

Chapter 4-5

Back to Vicente’s perspective, he’s frantically making his way back to the castle with Alonso after figuring out the letter was a trick. On the way they run into someone from the castle who informs them of Kaito and Leo’s kidnapping, apparently at the hands of the Romani, as well as that Raul was injured trying to prevent this. Luckily Vicente is onto Raul’s shady plans and with the information he gets from threatening Luka he puts it all together. Here we see again that Raul does not at all care if innocent people get wrapped up in his plans but we also get to see that Vicente is willing to go pretty far if it means getting Kaito back.

Chapter 6

Whilst on a break from the carriage ride Geoffrey and Kaito get the chance to talk for a bit before putting the plan to convince Rick to join them into play. Geoffrey shows his jealous side again when it seems like Kaito is defending Vicente, and Kaito still feels conflicted because he doesn’t think Vicente’s a bad person but decides to avoid talking about the issue to avoid conflict. Then, while Geoffrey is off trying to persuade Rick, Nigel comes over to talk to Kaito. With Nigel all the sudden being way more open about his affection and Geoffrey not getting angry like before, Kaito is confused by the change in dynamic since the last time he’s seen them. I hope they all get a chance once the situation has calmed down to talk about the things that happened when they were separated since everyone’s been through a lot since then.

Chapter 7

Vicente, with Alonso’s help, manages to get the information on where the escaping group are heading from Raul and they set off immediately in pursuit. Now it’s a race between time to see if Kaito and everyone can sneak away from their escape group before Vicente catches up to them. Vicente also finally lets go completely of his doubts about Alonso’s loyalty. I really like the way the friendship between Vicente and Alonso has developed. Vicente has a tendency to be almost fanatical when it comes to Kaito so he really needs someone to be frank and point out the flaws in that even while knowing it might make him angry. It was also honestly pretty satisfying seeing Raul get a bit of what was coming to him, I did not expect them to actually drag him behind a horse. Despite being being captured and having his plan figured out he’s still scheming. It seems like that isn’t enough to break his spirit and I wouldn’t be surprised if he has more tricks up his sleeve. :eyes:

Boy does it feel nice to get back to this series!

Reading this the suspense is killing me, if only it wasn’t time for bed :sob:

I don’t know if I ever asked/heard; what does your ranking of our romantic options looks like pyororon? :eyes:

Amazing how this keeps working out for our heroes, haha. I don’t really blame them, though; he would be highly unpleasant to work with.

I thought this was an interesting section for sure (+ further along as Vicente travels to find Kaito). We see a very nice, concerned, gentlemanly Vicente when he’s with Kaito, but take the latter out of the equation… You’re basically just flipping a switch there. I think it’s basically the first time in the series we see this from him, though it does pop up in the extra stories.

Totally agree! I wasn’t sure about Alonso myself at first, either; the guy just kept hanging around on the edges of things, and I couldn’t tell what part he was going to play, haha. But I think the two balance each other out well!

Totally; Vicente being brutal rears its head. What’s even scarier is how much Raul doesn’t care (or pretends not to); the man really starts to show off his psychopathic side…

Volume 12 is so good in particular. :face_holding_back_tears: I can’t wait to hear what you think of the ending.

My personal favorite is Nigel but when it comes to who I think should end up together I can’t help but root for the established couple, though I can’t say I’d be mad if things somehow turned out to be a win win. There’s really no one of the options I don’t like though so I feel conflicted sometimes.

I do wonder which one it is, he gave up the info pretty fast for someone who says he’s always been strong when it comes to pain but that could have been more out of a fear of dying I guess. I’m more curious now about his background after reading that, it doesn’t excuse his actions but it would be interesting to know how he turned out this way or if he’s always kind of been like that.

Those chapters were so good :sob: such a good end to the Spain arc

Chapter 8

Man this chapter kept hitting me in the feels. First in that scene where Kaito used the signal between him and Geoffrey, and then that scene with Vicente. :face_holding_back_tears:
I really didn’t expect Vicente to catch up so fast. I was also really surprised that it seemed like Kaito was going to get captured again after everything that happened because I never expected Vicente to actually let him go like that. That’s true love :sob:

Finding out Kaito actually does have tuberculosis is also so tragic for everyone involved…

Chapter 9

Seems like with this chapter this arc is fully wrapped up and another one is starting. It’s nice to see everyone back on the Gloria again.
We also get the first glimpse of what Kazuya’s been up to in a while, and along with that some more hints into what’s going on with the time leap. It’s interesting that it seems to be going in more of a fantasy direction. I guess if the fairy door theory is correct it’s not necessarily that supernatural creatures exist only in the parallel world that Kaito is in currently but more that they just exist in general and people don’t know? It’ll be interesting to see how that idea gets fleshed out after this. I’m most curious about why the door there seems to lead specifically to the 16th century since all of the prior instances seem to be pretty consistent.

Returning to F&B after a two-year hiatus

Finished chapter 5: Vicente chases the gypsies in order to get Kaito back. That’s where I had to stop last time because I simply could not stand his ā€œI need to have him and I’ll take him by force if need beā€ ramblings back then. Now I reread the chapter and it turned out to be over right after where I stopped. He also found Leo and realized how cruel he had been to him by ordering him to protect Kaito while still being a young boy. They then interrogate the gypsies, and it turns out their chief is the one who transferred the letters to Geoffrey and Nigel :star_struck: It all started to converge. He also knew about the nicknames for the spy (I’m not sure but I think Raul was nicknamed scorpion while snake was reserved for somebody else?). And while they interrogate him, all of a sudden it all clicks for Vicente. This was so beautiful to witness! I’m not 100% sure whether he got it all correct - I thought there was one bit that he misunderstood? but it’s been a while for me… And then the most beautiful scene was of course the start of the Alonso-Vicente bromance :smiling_cat_with_heart_eyes: So good that Vicente found an ally.

Woohoo! Glad to have you back!

Alonso’s just so wonderful in general; I’m glad he never gave up on Vicente. :smiling_face_with_tear:
