I dunno how old you are, but I was nearly an adult before I even could play FF5 via the fan translation. I was stuck at an aunt’s dairy for most of a summer, in an un-air-conditioned garage where I was allowed to stick my big, fat 90s PC and play an emulated copy of the FF5 fan translation all day.
I dunno if any translations used “Butz” other than the fan translation, I haven’t done the research. Obviously it’s a real name, but the kind that gets you made fun of in school. The official ones made it Bartz, which AFAIK is a real German name also. Bartz’s last name name is Klauser, which sounds pretty German to me.
The first official FF5 translations were flamboyant, to say the least. I’ve started putting in the “official” FF5 translation as a separate column in the spreadsheet and they sure take liberties.
(To be clear, it is my opinion that a properly localization should take TONS of liberties. It’s just that the ones they chose to take are often a bit goofy in this case.)
The original english translation was made by a bunch of (basically) kids on the internet. So, it had a childish level of cursing in it. Look how adult we are, we said ****!
Oh no I didn’t know that. Sorry to all the Butzs out there
Yeah, same. Weird to think the younger folks on here have had relatively easy access to it all their lives. Being old is funny. It’s been a while but I don’t remember FF5’s being half as uh, flamboyant, as some other fan translations back in the day. This one from Tales of Phantasia was especially hard to forget
That whole exchange is incredible. I’m of two minds, because I’m not a fan of the unnecessary crudeness, but it also fits the context really well and is full of personality. Yes, very “flamboyant”.
Though, when I said flamboyant I was talking about the official translation, which I’d expect to be much more respectable than it is, yet it’s full of pirate talk, memes, internet humor.
Here’s a line that in the FF5 Advance script that doesn’t even have a matching line in Japanese: (doesn’t really spoil anything but blurring anyway) Please! When I was your age, we crossed burning sand every day and liked it! Come on, Bartz!
The game feels very open so far in terms of job choices. Not necessarily well balanced, but there’s enough flexibility that it’s not too hard to make any party work with minor tweaks, at least so far.
I’m so curious about FF5 now, people make it sound fantastic. Unfortunately I know how random I am about agreeing or absolutely clashing with popular opinion so I dunno what to expect
I knew to expect it in that there are job systems again but the impression I’ve gotten is that it’s more what you’d expect where you can actually make decisions this time and not just do whatever it constantly dictates.
Beyond that though, if it’s more FF3 I’m probably going to hate it heh.
The last thread of the Final Fantasy IV club will be posted on August 29, time to decide when we want to start with 5.
We probably at least want a one week break, so it would be September 12th at the earliest, but I know that a decent number of people are a few weeks behind on the FF4 club so it could be a good idea to leave a bit more room for them to catch up.

The poll is anonymous and will close in a week. You can pick several options.
Definitely not fond of the Pixel Remaster アレンジ for this one. I realize that it’s a pretty lighthearted game but they went full clowncore for some tracks…
I knew it would make you angy @Akashelia but I won’t miss an opportunity to complain about bad remaster decision. Fortunately you can always return to the original music score in the PR.
