In the still, at least, I absolutely love how the water looks in the 3D version. These low quality textures really take on their own unique vibe, something about that image is almost unsettling to me.
津波
I had the same reaction, I looked for the footage on youtube:

(It’s at 3:44 if the timestamp doesn’t work)
Then the unflooding at 4:14:

Honestly the style of this version is growing on me. I still strongly dislike the character design but a lot of the monster and universe stuff is quite charming.
I’m really enjoying this version too, despite the controller (or rather lack of) not being the best.
But they’ve added a lot, even the dungeons look way cooler (in my opinion). And the small changes here and there in the scenario, with people talking, are great too.
That’s also why I’m thinking that it could be nice to play FFIV on a 3D remaster again…
Knighthood
More like abuse lol
I’m still not quite sure about what his “まもる” command does. I tried using it figuring it was to actively shield whoever the target of the next attack was (so sacrificing the Knight’s turn to cover the other three members), but it didn’t seem to do anything.
Will have to experiment more.
Somehow I feel like they managed to make the unflooding look cooler on the famicom version honestly. That aside though, yeah, the water is really cool. I don’t think I really mind the characters personally; 3D version looks cute to me in general. The game is silly enough they might as well be little chibi guys.
Okay, I took a lot of pictures this week.
Week 5 in 3D
Ah nuggets, he’s dead. I guess we know what we need to do next. I actually already poked around the village once thinking Hein was the next objective lol.
Aight, time to help the King to get us all out of jail. I don’t remember this being a long dungeon at least.
The difference in his overworld versus battle sprite cracks me up lol.
We won first try for once! Woo.
Bye!
The voices are talking in my head again. Let’s all stare up at the ceiling!
F to the tree, and our necks, jeez they kept them angled up the whole time I spent drawing kanji.
Second airship! Second airship! Woooo.
I didn’t screenshot it in time, but for a split second our characters all did a SHOCKED face.
I agree with everyone, I really like the background on the 3D version. I was shook the first time I played this.
Thankfully we have a map in this version. I already knew though that we needed to go to the top right corner of the map first.
I love the atmosphere of the ruined ship! Also I forgot to explore it lol.
I just realized that pretty much nobody has noses in this game.
Woo, new party member! Off to the water shrine we go.
She can cast curara on us once in awhile. I also saw her use shield twice.
Finally, we are doing 1,000 damage in one hit. I did stop for a bit and get everyone to level 21 prior to exploring the cave. I needed to make sure that everyone was at least level 22 before the boss.
We had one casualty while exploring the dungeon.
Finally, the water crystal! Nothing bad can happen surely.
Rip.
Cloaked dude with many legs turns into whatever the heck that thing is while in battle.
The first try was UNSUCCESSFUL.
The second try was UNSUCCESSFUL.
The third try was SUCCESSFUL with one casualty!
F to the water shrine Miko, she was kinda useful while I was grinding.
New objective gained from the voice in my head. Also I love how that character looks in this version lol.
Now that we have the water crystal jobs, I’m going to mess around with ones I haven’t really used prior. My Geomancer will at some point become an Evoker.
I’ve pretty much only used OCR/game scripts to look up words I don’t know while playing, but I decided that today I wanted to play while on my Steamdeck, which meant I’d need to draw kanji I didn’t know. The whole process really wasn’t that bad?? I know stroke order and practice drawing when I learn, so I was pretty fast at drawing the unknown kanji. I just thought that was pretty cool, I’m unlocking new ways to learn.
reply
I like this change honestly, it makes a lot of sense for this character to do that given what we will learn later and it does help set up future development instead of springing them on us without any build up.
Pacing check to help me decide what to do with the later weeks:
- I think I would struggle if we went faster
- I like the current pace but I could handle it if we went faster
- I would like to go faster
It’s anonymous.
Love your report @Kelsyy ! Sorry you died many times but it makes for an even funnier report xD
Oh, I never got that, cool!
job market
I forgot to discuss this. I think it’s a good point, although I would edge a bit by saying that they’re not all that useful right now but at least some of them will prove useful later.
I think that’s the main weakness with the job unlocks in this game: the devs decided to tie them to the crystals, but as such you only get a few key points in the story where suddenly a batch of new jobs is dropped on your lap and it’s overwhelming every time.
The devs have thought of a way to work around this self-inflicted issue however: if you look at the jobs we unlocked with the water crystal, you’ll find that a bunch of them are basically unusable at this point (at least in the original version). You simply don’t have the gear for those classes. We got the 幻術師 for instance but we have no spell to teach them, so it’s completely useless at the moment. The 魔剣士 is also unusable as far as I can tell. The 風水師 is marginally usable, but you can’t gear them up correctly either.
I don’t really like that because there’s too much trial-and-error involved, and especially in the original Famicom version switching jobs only to immediately realize that you have to switch again is super annoying since you have limited inventory space and you have to equip/unequip everything manually.
I think it would have been much better if job unlocks were more granular. Maybe defeating the djinn and breaking the curse would lead to the king teaching you the Knight job. Maybe your adoptive father in the village would teach the white mage job. The small people could teach the thief job, the vikings could teach… the viking job etc.
It would also give us the opportunity to learn more about what those jobs do and what they’re useful for.
I really enjoyed this last weeks play. I think the series is just starting to hit its stride, or at least some of the parts that I enjoy the most.
While I miss mixing jobs like in FF5, and the story and many other elements from later games in the series it is all starting to click in this game, and it is hitting my nostalgias. The fact that a boss had weaknesses, we are getting confusing job choices, and the combat and statuses are finally balancing out makes me happy and feels more like the classic Final Fantasy formula to me.
I had only played this in 3d on the DS back in the day, so it is fun to go through the PR as its graphics are more nostalgic for me and the SNES days of my childhood. Anywho, I am excited for the next game, but I feel like playing this becoming less of a ‘chore’ and more fun, which I was looking forward to!
Jobbies
It’s been a couple years, but I think this is still how it works in FFV, batches of unlocks, tied to the crystals. They’re further apart, though, giving you more time to learn the ones you have, and are generally more useful.
FF3 3D also force you to manually re-equip every piece of gear. There’s no optimize button, and no sane order to the gear so you have to pore over your entire list to find the right item. That alone might have me unloading stuff to the fat chocobo so I can equip faster. I almost never change jobs in the 3d version now, because re-equipping is a pain and they make you weak for several battles after every change.
Note on the geomancer: he’s borderline overpowered in 3d remake. No, not borderline, totally overpowered. Meanwhile, in the pixel remaster he dies in 2 hits, and does 1/3 of the damage he does in remake. Everything in 3d is tuned to be harder except for this one thing.
FF5 job generalities
If I recall correctly the whole job balancing in FF5 is very different too, where jobs are more of a player preference rather than the game nudging you towards specific classes for specific dungeons/bosses like FF3 does. In FF5 you basically decide how much you want or don’t want to engage with the job stuff. Then again I haven’t played the game in so long, maybe I have rose tinted glasses.
風水師
In the famicom version his ちけい special can (and often will) fail and inflict damage to himself instead.
Also the offensive spells used by the black mage can (and often will) just misfire and do nothing.
I’d wash those shoes if I were you.
jobs
Oops, I thought “no gear is best gear” was on purpose, like the monk xD
At first I was a bit resistant to the new jobs but I took the bullet and tried them all. Not much to get out of the 幻術師 but I quite like the other ones, here’s my new team (haven’t played week 6 content yet, just went around trying out my team and maybe hit one or two bad endings by going wrong places):
