💎 Final Fantasy 1 Beginner Club - Home Thread

That’s the case if we’re talking about the Famicom screenshot I put in the top post. “I won’t hand over”.

It’s an example of yakuwarigo I mentioned in the other post: he’s supposed to sound manly and boisterous. He’s taunting the party.

But that’s for week two!

That’s a lovely backstory

I wanted Aerith theme played at my wedding ceremony. It almost happened but my wife chose another tune at the last moment …

Was it “one winged angel”? She asserted dominance.

:joy:
Not even that. She just wanted something more mainstream (and she’s not really into FF).

:joy: Akashelia lore, love it!

Thank you. I actually looked it up and figured it out. N3 grammar is way beyond me at this point.

@simias thank you for posting the link. I know that I’m way too far ahead with the script, but I’m starting to have a lot of fun with it. I’ve already learnt new grammar points and vocabulary. Plus, it’s more interesting reading about fantasy than about bugs and birds on Satori reader.

Ok I have added all the text from the castle as well (at least all the text I managed to trigger), which covers all I had in mind for Week 1.

That’s over 6k characters (not counting menus, spells, items etc…) which may be too much for a beginner club? Feedback welcome.

A few things to keep in mind however:

  • A lot of the text is optional (random NPCs) or generally unimportant (it’s not a big deal if you don’t understand the salutation the spell vendor uses).

  • A whole 2.5k characters are just from the 4 tutorial sages at the inn. Completely optional content that I would recommend beginners to skip if they want to save themselves some trouble as I will explain the game mechanics in plain English in the weekly threads anyway.

  • Many of the lines spoken by the various NPCs are variations of the same idea with the same vocab. If anything that seems rather beginner-friendly and will help reinforce that basic vocab.

  • The biggest chunk of mandatory text is the cutscene with the king which is 1.1k char on its own and will probably prove challenging for beginners with some trickier grammar and long sentences. Stuff like この国のナイトであったガーランドがセーラ姫をさらい、このコーネリアの国王の座を要求しておる⋯。

I feel like the beginning of the game is where the remasters have messed with the script the most, probably because the original really didn’t give you a lot to work with (both in terms of lore and also to explain the game mechanics. I presume that the game was sold with a paper handbook that explained a lot…). So the Famicom version has only 2k characters for that same section.

I feel like the rest of the game sticks a lot more closely to the original overall, so this section of the game is a bit of an outlier for text density.

for me, it generally feels like a lot of books…the first chapter or two takes some getting used to the authors style and then things get easier or repeat (until the next mini arc)

if someone really gets stuck, they can always put the game down and come back later (had do this with a few books I started and stopped when I first tried to read) but this shouldn’t scare anyone

This is what the club is for, if someone is confused - screen shot or write it down post the question here / someone will answer it pretty quickly

learning while playing games  and dungeon dining :fork_and_knife:
…oh no wait that’s a different thing :mushroom:

I agree, I’m more worried that beginners will feel overwhelmed by the quantity of text on week 1. Especially since, as we start to progress through the story, the balance of text-to-gameplay will shift heavily towards gameplay and we’ll probably end up spending more time dungeon crawling than chatting with villagers.

Ok I’ve added a bunch of translations (menus, spells, items, …) to the google docs.

That was actually educative, I don’t always bother to translate the names of all pieces of gear or consumables as long as I know what they do. I discovered that 鎖帷子(くさりかたびら) means “chain mail” and 山彦(やまびこ) means “echo (esp. one reverberating in the mountains)”. Not as cool as 響く kanji-wise though.

I also finally checked after all this time if I had guessed the right reading for 万能薬(ばんのうやく). I hadn’t.

Thank you for that
This spreadsheet is very useful
A lot of the vocabulary will be good for other games, too

One issue I’m running into in playing so far is that a lot of guides and walkthroughs are written for the original NES edition and while it’s nice that they’ll tell you a spell doesn’t work and isn’t worth getting, I wonder whether it’s fixed in later editions. I assume all the spells work in pixel remaster but I’m wondering which ones are worth getting. For instance, does shape only apply to physical attacks? Is haste worth casting on magic users? While I can find a lot of information about the ins and outs of the nes and PlayStation releases on gamefaqs, pixel remaster stuff is more recent and not as thoroughly documented.

I just saw that the google doc has links to a Japanese wiki page discussing this, that’s helpful to find.

Honestly I barely ever bothered with anything but pure offensive or defensive/healing magic in FF because I always found the status stuff to be too obtuse to be worth bothering with. The status spells often fail against bosses (which is where you would need these spells the most) and even when it does work it’s never completely clear if it was worth wasting a turn instead of just spamming a fireball in the enemy’s face.

I don’t think haste does anything if you’re not using physical attacks since I think it only increases the Hit% , but who knows.

I think haste in later games makes the ATB gauge fill faster so you get more turns, making it a very strong status, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s less useful in FFI. I know it’s a big deal to get and keep haste up in FFV for some boss battles.

Yeah haste + aura is basically OP in FF8 because you can just spam limit breaks.

This seems like fun! Bought the first remaster on steam and am excited to join!

I used the one on steam for pixel remaster and it worked great … (there are a few of them out there) but if you wanna try this one feel free - it does help a little with buying the spells

(probably won’t be much help with the squishy ones though) :splatter:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2559674814

all of the various guides on steam for FF1 are here:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/1173770/guides/

don’t honestly know the ins and outs and really only used it for the main boss battle anyway but I did cast it on the mages (can’t say it hurt anything)

By the way if you find details on what the spells do precisely, don’t hesitate to add them on the spell page of the doc, I’m sure others will find it useful.

I ran some stats on the kanji for week 1 (including items/menus):

I count 247 unique kanji, the WaniKani level breakout looks like this:

Not on WaniKani: 兜 (helmet) 鎧 (armour) 杖 (cane/staff/wand). Those three kanji are fairly common in fantasy settings so worth knowing if you consume a lot of this genre.

As you can see at WK level 10 you have almost 50% kanji coverage, you cross the 75% mark at level 20 and at level 30 you reach nearly 85%.

Some of the kanji in the later levels that are maybe worth looking into for this club even if you’re not there yet:

  • : sword
  • : princess
  • : key
  • : request (why is this on level 36? 頼む and 頼る are both very common)
  • : “overnight stay”, used in 泊まる which is “spending the night” (at an inn for instance), that will come up regularly.

And of course:

  • : demon, used in words like 魔法 (magic) and 魔女 (witch) and 魔術士 (mage).
