Levels 7 and 12 annoy me a bit because they mess with my nice flat line between 4 and 15.

I usually take around 10 days when I’m being “fast” and around 20 days when I’m on “slow mode”.

WK Stats

WK History

I started in September of 2022 after making the decision to go to Japan with a friend who had been trying to get me to go with her for 7 or 8 years. We knew we’d be going in late spring or early summer of 2023, so I figured that gave me time to learn a bit of the local language.

I had two major breaks:

  • The first was at the end of level three, when I decided to consider my options before buying into WK. Someone kindly gifted me most of the funds I needed for a Lifetime subscription for Christmas, so I went all in during the annual sale.
  • Second break was when WK had its major overhaul/changes in the spring of 2023. The whole thing put a bad taste in my mouth and basically wrecked my efforts to crunch up until my trip to Japan at the end of May. I turned on Vacation Mode and completely bailed WK, opting instead to focus entirely on vocab and phrases that would be relevant to my trip. Then life was chaos (housing insecurity among other things) from the time I returned from Japan until December. I used the Self-Study Quiz userscript to assess how much I’d forgotten and decided level 9 was where I should reset to.

Now I’m going at a steady pace, and it seems like the Lesson Picker feature has actually increased my speed. I believe this is because I can now better distribute vocab lessons amidst the kanji lessons so I don’t end up with a massive glut of vocab after finishing the kanji for a level.

Anyway, I really don’t like that I spent longer chunks of time not studying Japanese than I had spent studying Japanese with both my breaks. My intention at this point is to stay on course until I hit level 60 or I make the decision to move on to some other method of study. I’m moving about 1000 miles away soon, but honestly after over a decade of moving at least once a year, it’ll barely be a blip on the radar… I don’t foresee it interrupting my studies.

Because I just leveled up today my first post here.

I spent writing alle mnemonics down on paper that why it took so long for level 2 and probably 3.
At level 3 I decided to stop learning as it seem insurmountable because multiple factors.

Level at level 6 I was left with a lot off vocab of level 5 and took my time somehow by not making leveling up fast. (read not doing any lessons for some time, big mistake).

Let’s if I can bring it down 25/30 days per level.

Is it possible to get data from before a reset too? Mine is just showing the data from my most recent reset.

You can see where I stopped doing lessons in the run up to the JLPT, and then lost all motivation  hit 0 reviews again today though for the first time in months!!

I believe you can find the data somewhere here

You could also probably throw together a similar plot by calculating the time between level-up emails (subtract the times in a spreadsheet), if you’ve saved those, but it would require some manual labor.

Little bit faster than last level.

This is my second time reaching level 10.

I gave up at one point and had to reset so if my graph showed that it would look much worse.

891 days… Pass down the account to your children… and grandchildren… at this rate they might lvl.60 that Wanikani account!

Just kidding. Good luck getting back on the track and finding your ideal routine, consistency is key!

I could go faster, but I like having the odd rest day.

(I secretly still speak Japanese and read manga on said rest day, but it doesn’t strain me to do so anymore)
