Developing an app to test hiragana and katakana

Konnichiwa, lets just get to the point me and a group of friends who have coded for a while have decided we are going to release our first app and was looking for any suggestions of features etc.

It was originally going to be for just Android and IOS but we can port to a website if its wanted.

Instead of it having a finite amount of kana to answer it will just go forever until you get one wrong.

We are going to make it free.

any thoughts?

good luck. i used realkana years ago to quickly solidify my hiragana/katakana. a feature i’d encourage to include in yours like theirs, alternate typefaces to give variety and familiarity with different styles.

I’ve used a bunch of different apps for katakana and hiragana practice and the best ones I’ve found are the ones that do all three ways of testing:

  • See/Hear Kana select Romaji
  • See/Hear Romaji select Kana
  • See Romaji write Kana

It’s the writing the kana bit that I found most helpful and I’ve yet to find an app that does all three activities really well with a good built in SRS.

I don’t quite understand what you mean as in write could you elaborate please?

Certainly ^-^

The app provides a prompt such as Ka and you are then required to write the kana (either with a stylus device or your finger) on the screen. The best implementations I’ve seen of this have required correct stroke order, which gets you into good habits.

The best app I have found for this is called ‘Learn Japanese! - Kanji’ for iPad. Although I completely ignored the kanji part of it and the interface was pretty lacking, the hiragana and katakana learning sections right at the very start covered all the kana, including all Dakuten and handakuten variations. It had a very rudimentary built in SRS system too.

Thanks! that’s what I thought you meant just wondered how it would be implemented.
